M80 - Train Wreck Site

Highlight • Historical Site

Local legend has it that in about 1912 there was a major train wreck here which spilled the cargo of rough cut granite thought to be used for tombstones. Over 100 blocks rest on the hillside between the road and the river, with one on display at the Milepost 80 marker. Originally at this curve the railroad tracks were where the road is now. The stones range from suitcase size to grand piano dimensions with a few in the river. They are often difficult to see during full foliage.

Cannon Valley Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A great bike trail. If you are only going to ride a portion of it, I recommend starting in Welch and pedaling up to Cannon Falls, then it's a gradual downhill all the way back (only like a 2 percent grade or something). The other way to Red Wing is nice in the fall, in the summer it can get pretty buggy because of all the swamp water right near the trail.

There is a brewery at both ends of the trail, and the Red Wing one makes great pizza!

This is a lovely little rest area along the Cannon Valley Trail with great views of the water and a footbridge. There is a also an access trail down to the creek here. This is a nice spot to take a break from the saddle, take in the views, and sip some water before continuing on your ride.
