We hiked here from Garmisch Partenkirchen, a good 14 km there and back. The waterfalls are impressive. The power of the water, and there's no entrance fee. It's a highly recommended excursion :-)

For me worthwhile in winter via the winter trail. The hut itself is not really comfortable because it is often very busy. Toboggan run down north side. I prefer the ascent from Kappel or, as I said, the winter trail.
