The path leads over 29 footbridges and bridges and several stone stairs through the wild Almbachklamm near Marktschellenberg. Even a tunnel is crossed. At the foot of the Untersberg, the Almbach has formed a deep gorge in the terrain. The path through the Almbachklamm is three kilometers long. Trees line your path, the bubbling and roaring torrent flows next to you. Right at the entrance to the gorge you can visit the oldest marble ball mill in Germany. An adventure for the whole family – even in summer. The Almbachklamm is usually open from the beginning of May to the end of October. However, there may be changes due to weather conditions (it's best to check on the website before starting your tour). The starting point is the free Almbachklamm car park on Kugelmühlweg in Marktschellenberg. If you come by public transport, you can use bus lines 836 and 840. Further information is available at https://www.berchtesgaden.de/almbachklamm.

Please note that this bike/MTB highlight is off the official cycle path network. In the national park, cycling is only permitted on the paths that have been approved for this purpose, in order to protect the sensitive habitats of animals and plants and to avoid conflicts between user groups. Therefore I ask you to explore this highlight only on foot. Currently, according to the 1992 regulation and the 2012 amendment, cycling is only allowed on the following roads: 1. Hirschbichlstraße (state road 2099) and from the Bindalm bus stop to the alpine huts on the Bindalm; 2. Eiskar forest road to the fork in the path to the Schartennalm; 3. Eckau-Forststraße to Eckau-Alm with turnoff to the Schwarzederer-Wendeplatte; 4. Schappachstraße and Hammerstielstraße to Kühroint - turning point in front of the Archenkanzel - and forest road to Herrenroint; 5. Gotzenstraße and Hochbahnweg to Gotzenalm and access to the Stahlhaus; 6. Ligeretstrasse. The supplement to approved cycle paths from 2012 is in the Official Journal for the district of Berchtesgadener Land No. 20 from 05/15/2012 on page 127ff. (https://www.lra-bgl.de/t/das-landratsamt/amtsblaetter/). The ordinance is based on Art. 31 Para. 1 and Art. 43 Para. 2 No. 3 of the Bavarian Nature Conservation Act (BayNatSchG). We would be very grateful for your help to protect nature! If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. https://www.nationalpark-berchtesgaden.de/

The Malerwinkel is a popular viewing point on the north bank of the Königssee. The view from the Malerwinkel over the otherwise difficult to access Königssee extends over the pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä to the Schönfeldpitze in the Steinernes Meer. From the Königssee car park, a path leads along the picturesque boathouses into the Berchtesgaden National Park. Past the Café Malerwinkel, the walk leads to the so-called Malerwinkel. This hike is also very popular as a winter walk, then the path to the Malerwinkel is cleared and gritted. The captains of the electric boats of the Königssee fleet, or one of the companions, play a flugelhorn while traveling across the lake to demonstrate the echo to the passengers. Due to the elevated position, you can also hear the echo from the Malerwinkel. https://www.berchtesgaden.de/wandern/see-klamm-wanderungen/koenigssee-malerwinkel

When is the best time to visit the natural monuments around Schönau am Königssee?

The region is beautiful year-round, but the best time depends on your preferred activities. Summer (June to September) is ideal for hiking, swimming, and boat trips on Königssee. Spring and autumn offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds, with stunning foliage in autumn. Winter provides opportunities for snowshoeing and enjoying the serene, snow-covered landscapes, though some paths or attractions might be less accessible.

What kind of outdoor activities can I do near these natural monuments?

The area is perfect for various outdoor activities. You can enjoy extensive hiking trails, including routes to viewpoints like the Malerwinkel or more challenging ascents in the Watzmann Massif. There are also numerous mountain biking trails and road cycling routes for all skill levels.

How can I get to the natural monuments, and is parking available?

Many natural monuments, such as Lake Königssee and the Malerwinkel, are accessible from designated parking areas near Schönau am Königssee. Public transport options, including buses, also serve the main attractions. For specific locations like the Almbach Gorge, there are usually nearby parking facilities.

What is the Eiskapelle, and is it safe to visit?

The Eiskapelle (Ice Chapel) is a permanent snowfield at the foot of the Watzmann mountain, often forming a large ice cave. It's one of the lowest and most accessible snowfields in the Alps. While the hike to it offers stunning scenery, entering the cave itself is extremely dangerous due to disintegrating ice. Visitors are strongly advised to maintain a safe distance from the entrance for their safety.

What is the Watzmann Massif, and what does it offer?

The Watzmann Massif is Germany's third-highest mountain, with its highest point reaching 2,712 meters. It's renowned for its challenging ascents, particularly the Watzmann Ostwand (East Face), which is the largest wall in the Eastern Alps. For experienced mountaineers, it offers demanding climbs. Even for non-expert hikers, the views of the massif from the valley are impressive, and there are routes to mountain huts like the Watzmannhaus.

What is the Steinernes Meer, and what can I expect there?

The Steinernes Meer, or 'Stone Sea,' is a vast karst alpine plateau featuring over 60 peaks, lakes, and caves, with many peaks exceeding 2,000 meters. Its name aptly describes the undulating rock formations resembling a petrified ocean. It's ideal for mountain hiking and multi-day treks, offering challenging yet rewarding routes with breathtaking views. Several alpine huts provide accommodation for longer tours.

Yes, the region is home to the impressive Röthbach waterfall, which is Germany's highest waterfall. It is easily accessible from Salet-Alm, typically reached by boat across Lake Königssee.

Can I visit the natural monuments during winter?

Many natural monuments remain accessible and offer unique experiences in winter. Paths to popular viewpoints like the Malerwinkel are often cleared. While boat services on Lake Königssee operate year-round (weather permitting), some higher alpine trails may be closed or require specialized equipment like snowshoes. Always check local conditions before your visit.

What do visitors enjoy most about the natural monuments around Schönau am Königssee?

Visitors frequently praise the pristine beauty of Lake Königssee and the serene atmosphere away from the main boat dock. The dramatic scenery of gorges like Wimbach Gorge and Almbach Gorge (Almbachklamm), with their waterfalls and varied terrain, are also highly appreciated for their photo opportunities and dynamic experiences.
