Nice bike path! Runs mostly on the old railway line, well developed and signposted. Experience the Altmühltal, visit the places and stop off at the Gasthof zum Hirschen in Wasserzell and eat well - great! Then finally an espresso in the café in Dollenstein.

The Solnhofen area is renowned for its unique geological formations. Key features include the impressive Twelve Apostles Rock Formation, a series of towering dolomitic rock pillars shaped by ancient seas and weathering. Additionally, the Solnhofen Limestone quarries are world-famous for their exceptional preservation of fossils from the Jurassic period, offering insights into prehistoric life.
The Solnhofen Limestone quarries are a *Konservat-Lagerstätte*, meaning they preserve exceptionally detailed fossils from 150 million years ago. They are the sole source of all known *Archaeopteryx* specimens and have yielded over 750 plant and animal species, including rare soft-bodied organisms. Visitors can even search for their own fossils in a dedicated hobby quarry, connecting directly with Earth's ancient past.
Yes, several natural monuments are suitable for families. The View of the 'Twelve Apostles' rock formation and the Altmühl River at Attenbrunn Mill are both highlighted as family-friendly. The interactive fossil hunting experience at the Solnhofen Limestone hobby quarry is also a great activity for all ages.
The region offers diverse hiking trails. You can find routes like the 'Rundweg ‘Teufel trifft Apostel’' or trails leading to viewpoints such as the View of the Twelve Apostles (Zwölf Apostel) in the Altmühl Valley. For more detailed hiking options, explore the Hiking around Solnhofen guide.

The Altmühl Valley is beautiful year-round. Spring and summer offer lush greenery and vibrant flora, especially in the semi-arid meadows near the Twelve Apostles. Autumn is particularly scenic due to the changing colors of the leaves, as noted by visitors to the Altmühl River at Attenbrunn Mill. Winter can also offer unique, tranquil views, though some trails might be less accessible.
While the Twelve Apostles and Solnhofen Limestone quarries are famous, the Burgsteinfelsen near Dollnstein is another impressive natural monument. This 45-meter-high rock is recognized as one of Bavaria's 100 most beautiful geotopes and is a popular spot for climbers, offering a different perspective on the region's geology.
The area around the Twelve Apostles Rock Formation is a nature reserve known for its rich biodiversity. Its arid meadows, sparse pine and juniper woods, and heathland support 187 rare and protected plant species listed on the Red List of endangered species. Visitors can also spot numerous butterflies and grasshoppers.
For exploring the natural monuments and trails, it's recommended to wear comfortable, sturdy footwear suitable for hiking or walking on uneven terrain. Layered clothing is advisable to adapt to changing weather conditions, especially if you plan to hike along the Altmühltal-Panoramaweg or explore the quarries.
Many outdoor areas in the Altmühltal Nature Park, including trails and natural monuments, are generally dog-friendly. However, it's always best to keep dogs on a leash, especially in nature reserves like the one near the Twelve Apostles, to protect local wildlife and flora. Always carry water for your dog and clean up after them.
