The Wildenburg Castle ruins are situated at approximately 630 meters above sea level on the Wildenburger Kopf hill overlooking the Idarbach valley. It was the highest castle in the Hunsrück region.
Only a few remnants of the upper castle, perched atop a rocky outcrop, remain. A 22-meter-high observation tower was built on the summit of the rock, starting in 1980 and completed in 1981. From 1315 it was built by Archbishop Baldwin of Trier to secure the electorate of Trier. The castle was primarily aimed against the Counts of Sponheim.
