Magnificent! Great view! There is information about the snow situation on the Heinrich-Schwaiger-Haus website. At the end of July there was no snow at all.

One of the major transnational long-distance hiking trails in this region is the "ALPE-ADRIA-Trail", which leads from the Großglockner over the Nockberge Mountains to Slovenia and further south of Trieste, then to the Mediterranean Sea. Anyone who would like to take a closer look at the first glimpse can follow the route in the ARD media library: there is a two-part (one-hour total) documentary about this tour as part of the Bavarian television program "freizeit. Schmidt Max ...". with their scenic and cultural features. 10th highest mountain in Austria. It's a fabulous place. From there you can see a beautiful panorama of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße and of the Großglockner if the weather is clear. Can be done without glacier contact, if your start point is Heinrich-Schwaiger-Haus. Crampons and ice axe are recommended, especially in the early summer. I recommend making it 2 days tour because, on the first day, you can get to the Heinrich-Schwaiger-Haus from the Kaprun Kesselfall and see beautiful lakes and after a delightful oversleep with an amazing view on the lakes, make the summit and return via the bus.

Relatively easy to climb 3000m. The starting point for the mountain hike is the Alpengasthof Lucknerhaus, from there you can reach the summit in about 3 hours.

The region offers access to several impressive peaks. Austria's highest mountain, the Großglockner summit, is a classic alpine ascent. For a challenging but less crowded experience, consider the Großes Wiesbachhorn Summit. If you're looking for a more accessible 3,000-meter peak with fantastic views, Böses Weibl is a popular choice.
The peaks offer breathtaking panoramic views. From the Großglockner summit, on a clear day, you can see as far as the Dolomites and even the Adriatic Sea. The Großes Wiesbachhorn Summit provides magnificent vistas of the Kitzsteinhorn, the Großglockner, and the turquoise reservoirs of the Mooserboden. Even the more accessible Böses Weibl offers unobstructed views of the Großglockner, Großvenediger, and the wider Schober group.
The difficulty varies significantly. The Großglockner summit is a challenging high-alpine tour requiring significant climbing experience, sure-footedness, and equipment like crampons and ropes. The Großes Wiesbachhorn Summit is also demanding, rated PD-I35°, requiring excellent physical condition and often crampons and an ice axe. In contrast, Böses Weibl is considered one of the easier 3,000-meter peaks, suitable for experienced hikers with good fitness and sure-footedness (rated T4 alpine trail).
While many peaks are challenging, you can still enjoy spectacular views. The Kaiser Franz Josef's Viewpoint offers stunning vistas of the Großglockner and the Pasterze glacier, and it is wheelchair accessible. There are also many moderate hiking trails in the valleys and lower alpine pastures around Kals am Großglockner that are suitable for families.
The prime season for high-alpine ascents, like the Großglockner and Großes Wiesbachhorn, is typically from late June to early September, when snow conditions are generally more stable and huts are open. However, weather in the high mountains can change rapidly, so always check forecasts and conditions before setting out. Early summer might still require crampons and an ice axe on some routes.
The region is characterized by a high-alpine environment with prominent peaks and extensive glaciers, including the Pasterze, Austria's longest glacier, on the eastern slope of the Großglockner. You'll encounter firn-capped silhouettes, alpine pastures, mountain paths, and stunning turquoise reservoirs like those below the Großes Wiesbachhorn Summit.
Beyond peak bagging, Kals am Großglockner offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking routes, from moderate to difficult, such as the 'Luckner Hut – View of the Großglockner loop'. For cycling enthusiasts, there are challenging gravel biking routes like the 'Kalser Großglocknerstraße' and dedicated MTB trails. Yes, for longer ascents like the Großglockner, it's common to plan a two-day tour with an overnight stay. The Stüdl Hut or the Erzherzog Johann Hut (also known as Adlersruhe, Austria's highest mountain hut) are popular choices. For the Großes Wiesbachhorn Summit, many mountaineers stay overnight at the Heinrich-Schwaiger-Haus to enjoy a more relaxed pace and stunning views.
Visitors consistently praise the magnificent panoramic views and the sense of achievement from reaching these high-alpine summits. The region is appreciated for its non-stop excitement and unrelenting beauty, offering a blend of challenging ascents and rewarding landscapes. Many highlight the unique experience of being amidst Austria's highest mountains and glaciers.
The Blauspitze Summit, at 2,560 meters, offers a super brilliant all-round view of the Großglockner, Großvenediger, and several other peaks. The ascent is considered challenging and is recommended for experienced and sure-footed mountain hikers, with options including paths via the Weißer Knopf, the Aussig Teplitzer Weg, a via ferrata, or climbing on the west side via the Blauspitze Grad.
While climbing the Großglockner is technically demanding and requires significant experience, a guided ascent can provide a taste of high-altitude climbing for those without advanced technical expertise. Many consider it a 'first serious summit' with a guide, as it involves glacier crossings and exposed ridge sections.
