This is a 28-acre park boasting one of the largest lakes within city limits, with nearby tunnels dating back to the late 1800s. It is believed that these tunnels, whose creators remain unknown, were possibly made by Chinese immigrants to drain the swamp for agriculture, giving the park its name. Despite the mystery surrounding the tunnels' origins, this area boasts a rich history and stunning natural surroundings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the hiking trails in University Place suitable for beginners?

Yes, the area is very welcoming for beginners and casual walkers. Most trails are rated as easy, featuring moderate elevation changes and well-maintained paths. For a gentle introduction, consider the Tacoma Nature Center loop, which offers a flat and scenic walk around a lake.

Can I bring my dog on the trails?

Dogs are welcome on most trails in the University Place area, but they must be kept on a leash to protect local wildlife and for the consideration of other trail users. For off-leash fun, the highly-regarded Chambers Creek Regional Park features a dedicated fenced dog park where your pet can run freely.

Are there any paved or wheelchair-accessible trails?

Yes, University Place offers excellent paved trail options. The Grandview Trail, part of the popular Grandview Trail & Soundview Trail loop, is a 1.25-mile paved path along a bluff with fantastic views and is known to be wheelchair accessible. It's a great choice for a smooth walk or roll.

What is the terrain like at Chambers Creek Regional Park?

The park offers a mix of experiences. The upper Grandview Trail is a wide, paved path on a relatively flat bluff. In contrast, the Soundview Trail features steeper inclines as it descends towards the water. For a more rustic feel, the Chambers Creek Canyon Trail follows the creek through a forested ravine with a natural surface.

Where can I find the best views for a sunset hike?

For stunning sunset views over Puget Sound and the nearby islands, trails along the western-facing bluffs are your best bet. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge walk offers an elevated, open perspective perfect for watching the sun go down. Trails within Chambers Creek Regional Park that run along the bluff also provide spectacular evening vistas.

Are the trails good for hiking year-round?

Absolutely. The trails around University Place are accessible throughout the year. The region's mild climate means you can hike in all four seasons. During winter, the paved and well-drained gravel paths, like those in Fort Steilacoom Park, are particularly reliable choices.

What makes the trails at Kobayashi Park unique?

Kobayashi Park offers a more intimate and tranquil hiking experience. Its trails follow the confluence of Leach and Chambers Creeks through a peaceful, forested setting with wetlands. It provides a feeling of being secluded in nature and connects to a larger trail system in the neighboring city of Lakewood, offering options to extend your walk.

Are there any family-friendly hikes that are not too long?

Yes, there are several great options for shorter family outings. The Titlow Park loop is an excellent choice, offering a relatively flat, sub-2-mile walk with beach access and a playground, making it a favorite for families with children.

How difficult is the Chambers Bay Loop?

The main loop, which combines the Grandview and Soundview trails, is generally considered easy to moderate. The total distance is just over 3 miles (5.2 km). While the upper Grandview Trail is flat, the Soundview Trail portion includes some significant inclines as it goes down to the shoreline and back up, providing a good workout.

What do other hikers say about the trails in University Place?

The trails are highly rated by the komoot community. Hikers frequently praise the stunning, panoramic views of Puget Sound available from many routes. The well-maintained paths and the variety of scenery, from coastal bluffs to forested canyons, are also commonly highlighted as major attractions.

Where is a good place to park for hiking at Chambers Creek?

There are several parking options. The main lot for Chambers Creek Regional Park, located at 6320 Grandview Dr W, is a popular starting point with ample space and direct access to the Grandview Trail. For those wanting to explore the canyon, the Upper Chambers Creek Canyon Trailhead at 6420 Chambers Creek Rd W is another excellent option.

Are there any waterfall hikes in the immediate area?

While the region is defined by its beautiful coastal and forest scenery, significant waterfall hikes are not a primary feature of the trails directly in University Place. The hikes here focus more on offering expansive views of Puget Sound and tranquil walks through parks and canyons.
