A relatively flat and easy trail except for the beginning when you climb up the ridge. Most of the climbing is at the beginning and once you make it to the top you'll get an incredible overview of this area of Carlsbad Caverns National Park. As the name of the trail suggest you'll be hiking a ridgeline that's slightly floating above everything around you.

The wilderness features the rugged terrain of the Chihuahuan Desert and Guadalupe Mountains, characterized by steep, rocky ridges and craggy canyons. Elevations range from 3,600 feet to 6,350 feet, with landscapes of desert shrubland, grassland, and woodland ecosystems.
Yes, the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail Loop is an easy, family-friendly option. This 1.4-mile path is located near the visitor center and provides an accessible introduction to native desert plants and local wildlife.
For experienced hikers, the Yucca Canyon Trail offers a more demanding experience. This 15.3-mile route leads through varied desert terrain and typically takes around 7 hours and 41 minutes to complete.
The best time to hike is generally during the cooler months, from fall through spring (October to April), to avoid the extreme heat of summer. Be prepared for significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, and always carry plenty of water as sources are scarce in the backcountry.
Dogs are generally not permitted on unpaved trails within Carlsbad Caverns National Park, which includes the wilderness area, to protect wildlife and natural resources. They are allowed in developed areas, parking lots, and on paved roads, but must be on a leash. Service animals are an exception.
Yes, the Upper Rattlesnake Canyon to Guadalupe Ridge Loop is a popular moderate loop trail. It covers 6 miles and offers scenic views of the canyon and the edge of the wilderness.
The Chihuahuan Desert is highly biodiverse. Hikers might spot various mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Notable wildlife includes species like mule deer, javelina, various bird species, and several types of lizards and snakes. The park is also famous for its bat population, particularly the spectacular bat flight program from spring through fall.
While many day hikes do not require permits, backcountry overnight trips into the wilderness area do. It's essential to check the official National Park Service website for the most current regulations regarding permits and any other requirements before your visit. You can find more information on surface hiking trails at nps.gov.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Reviewers often praise the unique combination of rugged desert landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and the opportunity to explore trails that offer both challenging climbs and serene nature walks.
Hikers should wear sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing suitable for varying temperatures, and sun protection including a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. It is crucial to carry ample water, as sources are scarce, and bring a map, compass or GPS device, and a first-aid kit. Thorny desert plants are common, so long pants are recommended.
Above ground, the wilderness showcases the dramatic Guadalupe Mountains and the unique Chihuahuan Desert flora like yucca, sotol, and agave lechuguilla. While not a hiking trail in the traditional sense, the park's primary attraction is the vast underground Carlsbad Cavern, which can be accessed via the Natural Entrance Trail for a unique descent into the Big Room.
