July 8, 2024, Swedish Settlement

The title to this trip is misleading. You will not get to the Swedish Settlement if you follow the directions given. The Swedish Settlement is east of the parking lot and not on the route indicated. It is in fact, east of Juniper Rock and the Marengo River.

November 10, 2023, Rock Lake Trailhead

The trailhead has a $5 daily use fee. The trails from here are numerous and interweaving, so it is best to bring a GPD if you plan to follow a specific route. The trails are beautiful winding singletrack that pass by a number of wooded lakes. The trails are used by mountain bikers as well as hikers so keep both ears open.

From here you get fantastic views of the Marengo River valley. You climb up a large rocky outcropping, so be prepared for some scrambling! The views are especially stunning in autumn.

Here you will find a towering lookout which used to be an old fire tower. There is a precarious metal ladder to the top which is well out of reach to deter passersby.
