Slavnik (Taiano)

Highlight • Summit

With its 1028 meters of altitude, Mount Slavnik (or Taiano) is one of the highest peaks in Slovenian Istria and is a popular excursion destination for the inhabitants of the Slovenian Littoral and Karst region. Its summit, given the absence of other nearby mountains, offers one of the most beautiful views of the region; in good weather, you can admire the Adriatic Sea, a part of the Carnic and Julian Alps (among which Mount Triglav naturally stands out), the Karawanken, the Kamnik and Savinja Alps, as well as the Re mountains (Nanos), Auremiano (Vremščica) and Nevoso (Snežnik) in the immediate vicinity.

To reach its top you can choose various marked trails and, just before the finish line, refresh yourself in the Tumova koča hut, open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Friendship Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Established in 1981 on the initiative of cross-border inhabitants on the occasion of the first edition of the Odprta meja - Open border initiative, it has become a constant tradition ever since.
The path corresponds to the ancient salt road, used for centuries by merchants from Carniola to reach the Trieste salt pans through Zaule. Legend has it that it is most likely the same path used by Martin Krpan (a legendary Slovenian character) who smuggled salt from Istria on his mule. The walk along the friendship path can start from Bagnoli della Rosandra-Boljunec, following the CAI path n.1 up to Bottazzo-Botač. From here, cross the bridge that once marked the border between Italy and Slovenia and continue following the signs to Beka-Ocizla. A beautiful path through woods and karst land.

Gravel Path to Monte Cocusso

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The slope is significant but not excessive, however the presence of a lot of gravel and loose rocks makes pedaling difficult. Suitable for MTB but not recommended for gravel.
At the end of the climb you arrive near a small church and then some abandoned buildings. You can continue along another comfortable dirt road through a beautiful forest, cool even in summer, up to the top of Cocusso, or about 1.5 km before turn right and take the path that leads to Castellaro (Veliko Gradisce)

There is a stone to mark the top but little space around it. The trees surrounding the summit are quite tall and prevent you from seeing the view. The path that goes up from the east is very steep and it is better to use it for the descent, the one from the west (from Cocusso) more pedalable but both often very muddy.

Mythical Park Rodik

Highlight • Structure

Very nice rural village now provided with cultural and historic tours. Many mountain biking as well as hiking trails in the surroundings. The woods are enjoyable mainly at the beginning of autumn both for the colorful leaves and the chestnuts that can be gathered from the ground.

mamòn and Antonio have decided to become saints. they propose to take me to Trieste by car. I think inside me maronnn the gratitude I have is immense. Taking the train with this bike is really too much. Will it weigh 50kg?
They take me to Draga, Val Rosandra, where I went for the first time in the summer of 2021 with Marta for a beer and in July with Rebecca to sleep in a tent. It is now my Friulian home, it seems nice to start from here. Then, let's face it, 200m in altitude dampens me... I load the bike, I hug Antonio, I hug my mum who is in tears omg come on mother fuck it's enough I'm crying and I'll come on. While I'm leaving she makes a video bye bye I stop 20m further to fill up with water and I see her reach me and say wait I didn't actually make the video..ok boomer mammaaaaa my favorite boomer deep a panzerotto my mom! Ok I'm off again but this time I don't turn around.
It's 3pm and today, if I do 20km, I'll be happy. I make 25. I have time to go in and out of Slovenia to enter Croatia where I decide to settle in a town made up of 3 houses and a church. I sleep next to the church, the climate is beautiful humid, very humid. I feel alone, all of a sudden. It hasn't happened to me in ages. Hectic weeks surrounded by people and pufff total nothingness. I sleep on it.

Very little lake feeded by a nearby spring. Mountain bikers pay attention to the mud, the ground is always very slippery.
There are some tables and benches to stay fresh and relax in summer eating a snack, but also many mosquitos whishing to do the same with you!

View of Ćićarija Plateau

Highlight • Viewpoint

Ćićarȉja (ital. Ciceria, Cicceria, Monti della Vena, lit. Čičarija), a hilly plateau in the northern and northeastern continental part of Istria, extends in a Dinaric direction from the northwest (the hinterland of Trieste and Koper) to the south -east (the hinterland of Rijeka and Opatija).

It is approximately 45 km long and 10 to 15 km wide (surface area approximately 500 km2), and on average 700 to 800 m high. Its green cover is dotted with white cliffs, which is why that part of Istria is also called White Istria in the strict sense.

There are no clear borders: on the eastern side its border is along the Kastav–Matuji–Veprinac–Vranja road in the direction of the Poklon pass. To the east of it the Liburnian area extends along the Opatija Riviera. The northwestern border is the Tršćanski and Brkin Karst area, the northern border is the Ćićarija ridge parallel to the Rijeka – Trieste road (Brgud – Šapjane – Podgrad – Obrov – Materia – Kozina), and the southern border is between the calcareous and flysch subsoil (Vranja - Lupoglav - Roč - Buzet – Sočerga – Črni Kal). The morphological characteristic of the area is a mountainous series of hills and valleys arranged in a Dinaric direction, at the base of the flysch deposits on which the older limestone deposits were slid by tectonic movements, thus giving the Ciceria a specific scaly structure. Above these covers are level terraces that shape valleys with pastures and forest cover. The elevated parts of the tops of the limestone deposits are mostly bare and have vertical sections where the "fronts" cover the flysch-like substrate.

There is a deeply unnatural element in the barbed wire between the trees. As if even to the naked eye a sense of inopportune, unexpected, extraneousness was marked. Thought to stop the other, whoever he is, ends up being the other himself. A sort of natural corridor, between the mountains, that thousands of people, for years, have traveled along their journey on the Balkan Route from Bosnia Herzegovina to Slovenia. Only to be pushed back.
The police ascertained that all these people entered Slovenian territory illegally and were therefore deported to Croatia, which is where they came from. Meanwhile, elsewhere, others will try. Some call it The Game, a way of trying to make a mockery of one's own destiny. Barbed wire was born after 2015, when suddenly the hearts of politicians and the media opened for a short window of time. Then everything closed, imprisoning thousands of fleeing lives along the way. Today, however, we are witnessing a sort of theater of the absurd: the flows continue, no one talks or works on solutions, new walls are announced.

The crossing of the Italo-Slovenian border along the Val Rosandra cycle path, which follows the route of the old Trieste-Kozina railway, is one of the most symbolic points of the entire route. Inaugurated in 1887 to connect the Habsburg port to the internal railway network, the line was decommissioned in the 1960s, making way for a trail that crosses breathtaking natural scenery. The border is located shortly after the town of San Giuseppe della Chiusa, near the old station of Draga Sant'Elia. Today, the crossing is marked by simple border stones and information signs, but the thrill of crossing the line between Italy and Slovenia, immersed in the white limestone of the Karst, remains unchanged. Cycling or walking through the tunnels carved into the rock and the viaducts that overlook the scree slopes of the nature reserve, one can perceive how this route, once a barrier between opposing blocs, has become a corridor of friendship and recreation.

If you intend to go up towards Beka: Road not suitable for bikes, be careful very slippery in the cold seasons due to a lot of water, even on foot the first part going up is very steep the rest of the route is very nice but be careful at the beginning
