Zelške Caves

Highlight • Cave

Zelške jame caves

The entrance to the water caves from which the Rak River springs is under the small natural bridge in the Rakov Škocjan Karst Reserve. The water that seeps into the western part of Lake Cerkniško jezero continues its path right through this 3 km long cave system. The cave used to be even longer, but after the cave ceiling collapsed, the Rakov Škocjan gorge was formed and only the small and large natural bridges remain from the former ceiling.

Definitely worth seeing!

The Rakov Škocjan Karst Reserve

Rakov Škocjan is a picturesque karst canyon that was formed when the cave ceiling collapsed. This is proven by the mighty natural bridges that rise 40 m above the river Rak. On a walk from the small to the large natural bridge, in the shade of hundred-year-old trees, you will witness geological processes that have been taking place for millions of years. The fact that the Rakov Škocjan area was declared the first Slovenian landscape park in 1949 proves that this 2.5 km long gorge is indeed something special.

You can discover 2 natural bridges, passage caves (temporarily water-bearing) and an incredibly beautiful nature. The route is very interesting and varied. Sturdy shoes are recommended.

The way down is steep and slippery when wet. You should be surefooted. But it's worth it. It's gorgeous down here. You can't see the bridge from above. There is also a path on the other side of the bridge that leads back up to the road, but it is not marked.

We were intrigued and wanted to know if you couldn't really see the river. So we scrambled into the cave, squeezed through the narrow, short (careful, it was quite slippery for us) gap and were rewarded. Here you have a window like to another world.
Unfortunately, the sun was very unfavorable for the pictures at the time, so you didn't see much. All I can say is look!
You look into a cave and below the river flows out with rapids, just great!
Attention ⚠!! after the hole it goes down a few meters vertically, so keep your distance from the edge!

Tkalca Jama Cave

Highlight • Cave

The Weaver's Cave (Slovene: Tkalca jama), also known as the Inlet Cave (Zatočna jama), is a ponor cave in southwestern Slovenia. It runs from the western side (downstream) of the Rak Škocjan Valley, where it has two entrances, and continues in the Planina Cave. It is drained by the Rak stream, which is part of the Ljubljanica spring system.
The cave was named after a stalagmite resembling a weaver. An old story says that he turned to stone because he worked on Sunday, the Lord's day.
The cave was also depicted by artists including Franz Goldenstein (1808-1878) in the 1850s. His painting of Rak Škocjan's Great Natural Bridge from inside the cave is on display in the Slovenian National Gallery.

The cave can be crossed if the water level allows it. The riverbed had dried up for us.

Rakov Škocjan Valley

Highlight • Gorge

This beautiful karstic valley, crossed by two dirt roads, has many natural curiosities, such as arches and bridges, as well as caves formed by the action of water on the rock. The result: natural wonders, like so many places for discovery and fun. Many hiking trails take you there. You will find in the heart of the valley, a hotel-restaurant which bears the same name as this small nature reserve. You can eat there on their large terrace. They have bedrooms and there is also the possibility of pitching the tent for the night. A good option for accommodation just 6 kilometers from Cerknica.

Slivnica Mountain Hut (1,075 m)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The mountain lodge at Slivnica (1075 m) stands a little below the top of Slivnica (1114 m). It was built by PD Cerknica with financial assistance from the municipality of Cerknica and opened on October 10, 1964. In 1966, it was leased to the trading company Škocjan from Rakek, and a few years later it was taken over by the tourism and catering company Postojnska jama. Now the owner of the home is once again the municipality of Cerknica, which has been renting it out since 1994.

View:
There is a beautiful view of the Cerkniška lake, the Javornik groups, the Bloška plateau, the Kamnik-Savin Alps, Julijce, Karavanke and the Snežniške foothills.

More interesting tours:
- Cerknik lake - 2 h,
- Cave of the Cross - 3 h 30.

Cerkniško Jezero (Zirknitzer See).
Natural wonders, sometimes water, sometimes nothing.

Nice hiking destination with great, near 360° views from the top. No technical difficulties, just sensible shoes and decent enough physical shape required.

It's hard not to be left speechless by the spectacles offered by the Raw River as it hides and reappears from underground.

The ruins of the old Baroque castle rise above the Unica River gorge in the southern part of the Planina Plain. The Hošperk Castle (Haasberg) was built by the Eggenberg princes at the beginning of the 17th century, at the foot of an old medieval castle that was destroyed by an earthquake. At that time, the castle was considered the most powerful Baroque castle in Slovenia. It was famous for its rich interior and beautiful park, which unfortunately is only partially preserved today. The last owner of the castle was the Windischgrätz family, who purchased it in 1846. During the Second World War, the nobles emigrated to Italy and the castle was occupied first by the Italian army, then by the German army, and in 1944 it was burned down. The valuable interior furnishings, the family archive and the family tomb of the last owners of the Windischgrätz Castle were completely destroyed.

The ruins of Haasberg Castle, once considered one of the most beautiful Baroque castles in Slovenia and, with its valuable inventory, also one of the richest, stand near Planina pri Rakeku above the gorge of the Unica River.
