The Temenica is the largest sinkhole in Dolenjska. A good part of it flows through the dark karst underground, which is probably why this river got its name. It originates on the southern slopes of the Posavje Hills below the village of Javorje. In its upper course, it flows through impermeable rocks, but near the village of Dolenjska Ponikve it crosses over to permeable limestone, where it sinks in numerous gullies. The Temenica mysteriously flows into the Mirnopeška Valley at the Zijalo spring and flows lazily along it all the way to Goriška vas, where it disappears beneath the surface for the second time. Its third and last source is in Luknja pri Prečna.
