The forested karst landscape of the Kolpa Valley is perfect for exploring by bike. The Kolpa forms the border with Croatia in the south-eastern part of Slovenia. The green river has washed its way through steep and rocky slopes here, but offers plenty of opportunities for swimming in the open valleys.

"To hero Peter Šterk from Predgrad 36, * 1886, who in year 1918 gave his life for on the French front for the freedom of his dear motherland. Glory to him! From his parents and brothers." Predgrad is a small village. For me as Slovenian, the interesting thing here (besides noting that this poor fellow died a thousand kilometers away in a foreign land) is that the "motherland" to which the text refers, is actually Austro-Hungarian empire, which after all, ceased to exist in the very same year that the guy died, so most likely before the monument was constructed.
