A place that has its own why. The Kanal bridge shows the houses, the river and the mountains from the parapet and integrates and blends well into the context.

Crossed locations: Gorizia, Piazza della Vittoria - Salcano pass - Solkan - Isonzo dirt bike path - Plave - Mt Korada - Vrhovlje - Brestje - Kojsko - Versa Valley - Uclanzi - Bucuie - Water valley - Gorizia

Detailed description of the itinerary: isontinoinbici.it/Korada/mtb-monte-korada-isonzo-brda.html

Photo Gallery: photos.app.goo.gl/ytXAM2unbvBtgcyh7

Long and tiring but very varied, rich and extremely scenic itinerary. It starts from the city center of Gorizia at 80 m above sea level and reaches the top of Mount Korada at 811 m of altitude. The first 16 km are almost flat and take advantage of the splendid dirt track (9 km) which runs parallel to the emerald waters of the Isonzo river and the historic Transalpina Railway.
From Plave you climb for 7 km and 25 hairpin bends to the refuge and to the top of Mount Korada on which the isolated church of Sveti Gemderca rests, in an almost mountain environment. During the approach to the summit and the subsequent beautiful descent in balance on the ridge we are accompanied by wide expanses of perfectly manicured meadows and spectacular views as far as the eye can see towards the Friulian plain, the Alpine amphitheater and the Slovenian highlands.
The last part of the itinerary runs through the long valley of the Birsa (Versa) in a typically hilly environment where the vine and orchard crops follow one another without interruption. Interesting, from a historical and geographical point of view, is the area around the former agricultural pass of Giasbana where the boundary stones separate the precious vineyards of the Slovenian Brda from those of the Italian Collio. And finally we cannot fail to remember the beauties of Gorizia; its squares, its castle, its churches, its palaces and parks frame the first and last kilometers of this fantastic itinerary.

Steep Rocky Trail

Highlight • Trail

Based on the information, we almost took the road. We rode/pushed the route today on May 15, 2024 with our MTB and luggage. The perception is of course subjective, but the route is definitely open and can be passed. It is also not blocked by trees or anything else. The spot is steep and has coarse gravel and stones. So it really has nothing to do with a normal bike path. But for us it would have been a shame to take the road here. Maybe it will help one or the other to make a decision 😊

In Slovenian: Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja

The canal pastoral care already existed in the 13th century, so that a small church should stand on the site of today's church, as it was written in one of the documents in the archive of the canal community. This is already mentioned in documents from 1296.

A parchment letter from 1389 also states that the residents "were already regularly doing the service of God" at that time. The church was once the main point of the urban settlement.

The shape of the original church is unknown. Since the old church no longer met the needs of the growing population, a new Gothic church was built, as the inscription on the first column of the south wall of the presbytery in the Gothic minuscule "incepcio chori - anno domini m cccc xxx pmo" (1431) and the attest to conciliar documents from 1439. was then consecrated by the Bishop of Gorizia, Kristof.

After a fire in 1632, almost the entire church was restored and baroque. Almost all of the surrounding parishes had to do their part to repair the church. When the work was completed in 1670, the church was consecrated by the Bishop of Ljubljana, Jožef Discounta.

Soča Cycle Path Solkan - Plave

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Very nice, very well paved bike path along the Soča between the Slovenian-Italian border at Solkan and Plave.
very nice views of the emerald green Soča.
Attention at the railway underpass with stairs, sliding surface and narrow bridge.
The entry from the Italian side is not recommended, partly unpaved dirt road, super asphalt from the border, entry from the Solkan Bridge possible.
Continue to the canal on a small side street.

May 10, 2026, Gravel Section Along the Judrio

Beautiful dirt section always in excellent condition that follows the Judrio river, which here marks the border between Italy and Slovenia. Be aware that in Slovenia, on dirt roads, if not expressly forbidden, car and motorcycle traffic is absolutely permitted.

Guys, good news! The difficult and dangerous section has now all been perfectly fixed with concrete! It is still very steep and difficult to ride without getting off in the direction of Avçe, but now it can be done safely!

Cliff jumping and rock bathing are available in the middle of Kanal, near the bridge over the Soca River. Absolutely worth seeing, and in the afternoon or evening, the special light makes for an atmospheric experience.
