Plenty of shady spots to take a break. The church is closed.

There are two paths leading to Pleša from the car park on the motorway, making it ideal for a circular tour. The steep climb definitely requires surefootedness and a head for heights, but it is doable and worthwhile. The flatter descent should not be underestimated either, as some scrambling is necessary in places. Both paths are well marked.

Vojkova koča is a mountain hut just by the summit of Pleša on the great Nanos plateau. It’s named after Janko Premrl, also known as Vojko, who was a Yugoslav folk hero for his anti-facist actions during the Second World War. He famously led the Partisans against the Italians during the Battle of Nanos on 18th April 1942. Sadly, he died in battle at Idrijski Log in 1943.

Cerkev Sveta Hieronima, the church of St Jerome, is improbably situated at 3,340 feet (1,018 m) on the slopes of Nanos and is visible from many miles around. The story of its origin is an interesting one. It’s said that a hermit named Hieronima lived in a hut on the windswept Nanos massif. The local people would bring him food and other necessities and, in gratitude to them, he'd light a bonfire on Nanos to warn them whenever a storm was approaching. The people thanked him in turn by erecting this very church, so the story goes…

The summit of Pleša is the most popular objective on the great Nanos plateau. It’s served by the neighbouring Vojkova koča hut, named after the Slovene Partisan hero Janko Premrl, also known as Vojko, who led the fight against the Italians on the plateau during the Second World War. The views from Pleša's 4,308-foot (1,313 m) summit are superb, both along the plateau, across Slovenia and out to the Gulf of Trieste.
