The small island of Blejski Otok, with its famous Church of St. Mary and significant archaeological excavations from the Early and High Middle Ages, is located in the lake. It is the only island in Slovenia. The crossing to the island is usually offered in a traditional wooden boat, the Pletna (similar in terminology to the flatboats used in the Salzkammergut region).
