Ecopista of the Minho River: Monção to Valença

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The railway section that connected Monção to Valença was deactivated several years ago, suffering progressive degradation due to the lack of use. The Municipalities of Monção and Valença signed protocols with REFER so that, in that section, an Ecopista could be built, intended for cycling and walking.

Opened on November 14, 2004, the Ecopista do Rio Minho is a route of more than 20 km, next to the river, which deserves great praise and applause from most people. Along the route, between the historic centers of Monção and Valença, there are plenty of points of interest, making this ecological route the first in Portugal to take advantage of deactivated railway lines.

Ponte de Fillaboa

Highlight • Bridge

The Romans left their mark on the area as this was an important road that linked the region with Tui. A magnificent bridge whose first stones were placed on the riverbed by the great Roman architects.

The bridge underwent great modifications, in the 15th and especially the 17h century due to the conflicts and wars with Portugal. The bridge was modified to monitor the passage to the lands of Tudenses (Tui). This is evident by the various fortifications on both sides of the bridge, which today are mostly demolished and covered by vegetation. But the most remarkable thing about this area was the location of a fortress that was part of a military network made up of fortified buildings along the Miño River. The rearmaments of its foundations are hidden under hundreds of square meters of nearby vineyards.

Bridge of the Partitions

Highlight • Bridge

Although its origin is quite possibly Roman, the bridge shows many medieval characteristics. The bridge has undergone serious modifications throughout history, especially in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Many legends surround the old bridge. In one, the bridge was the meeting place for a gang of thieves who gathered here to "split" the booties. Another is the story of a group of knights who departed from here to other places to fight against the Moors. Another tells us that seven brothers gathered here (Asunción, Lucía, María de la O, Marta, Amaro, Blas and Cibrán) who decided to preach the word of Christ. Their work of preaching and doing good was so great that when they died, seven mountains grew over their bodies. They are honored by seven chapels in area towns (Pesqueiras, Ganade, Picoña, Ribarteme, Lira, Areas, Guláns).

Lapela Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

Also known as Belém Tower of Minho, the tower is all that is left of the small fortress built by D. Afonso Henriques around 1130. Most of the fortress was largely deconstructed in the early 18th century and the stone moved to Monção for the construction and fortification of the forteleza there. The tower is open to the public for tours and has literature in several languages. Laast time i visited the guide spoke English, Spanish and some French and was most helpful.

August 17, 2025, Ponte da Barbeita

Barbeita Bridge - Mouro River - Monção - Portugal The bridge over the Mouro River is located in Ponte de Mouro, connecting Barbeita to Ceivães over the Mouro River, in Monção. It is known that a bridge existed at this location at least as early as 1386. It was here that, in that year, the historic meeting between King John I and the Duke of Lancaster, pretender to the throne of Castile, took place. The marriage of the Portuguese king to Philippa of Lancaster, the duke's daughter, was also arranged. The old bridge visible today underwent renovations in 1627.
