Around 11,000 years ago, the Weser formed a gully lake in the area of today's moor. At that time, glaciers prevented the Weser from taking a northerly course as it does today, and it ran westwards north of the Wiehen Hills. When the glaciers melted and the Weser flowed northwards again, the gully lake silted up and became a moor that stretched parallel to the mountains for over 20 kilometres north of the Wiehen Hills. The maximum width of this "primeval moor" was three kilometres at the time. At first a fen developed, but then gradually a raised bog, the remains of which are now known as the Great Peat Moor. When the first warmer days of the year arrive, the Moorstrandhaus on Hücker Moor opens its doors. Here you can relax in the sun on lounge chairs and enjoy a drink while enjoying a small snack. A nice stop for cyclists in spring and summer. You can find information about the start of the season and opening times here: https://www.facebook.com/p/MOORSTRAND-HAUS-100072098264977/.

My highlight from 2021 needs an update. Something has changed at the location, some things have gotten better, some things have gotten worse and many things remain the same. The selection of food was significantly better at the beginning. What remains are the typical snack dishes, manta platters, etc., just run of the mill... The biggest problem is still logistics. One place for cold drinks, one place for hot drinks, one place for food. I have nothing against self-service, but it can take a while until you have everything at your table and in the worst case, the food is cold before you have the drinks. Splitting up for procurement is also bad, as the table can get lost. This should be centralized.

+++ I was particularly impressed by the Moorschnucken. These serve to protect the moor, similar to the sheep in the north to protect the dyke. +++You are near P6 (car park 6) at the south tower.

+++The moor is characterized by 3 hiking trails, which are marked on posts in blue, red and yellow. +++2, 2.5 and 7.5 km long paths await visitors. +++ Sufficient notice and information boards make the moor a very interesting place for excursions for young and old, i.e. also for families with children.
