August 26, 2026, Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Pombeiro

We visited the Monastery in August of 2026. It can be visited for a small fee. Check for the visiting times before going. There had been a a restoration of the the main organ some years ago. The Church itself is still used on occasion.

Located next to Av. 25 de Abril, the Arouca Municipal Park invites you to enjoy moments of peace in the heart of the historic center. It is home to the statue of the Holy Queen Mafalda. In the immediate vicinity are the Arouca Municipal Library, the Terreiro de Santa Mafalda and the Arouca Monastery. It is equipped with a playground, a 5-a-side football pitch and a car park.

Thoroughly impressive complex run by the Benedictine monks from 1041 to 1834, when all the religious orders in Portugal were dissolved. From the original Romanesque church only the front portal survives, the rest was reconstructed and expanded many times during the Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical periods. Perhaps the most surprising element is the incomplete cloister accessible by stepping through the door to the right of the church. https://www.rotadoromanico.com/en/Monuments/monastery-of-saint-mary-of-pombeiro/

The Benedectine monastery in this site was founded in 985, or even earlier, according to some researchers. What we can see today is a Romanesque facade from C10, and Gothic nave, apse, tower and cloister, added between C12 and C15. In 1551 King João III transferred the ownership of the monastery to the College of the Grace of the Hermits of Saint Augustine in Coimbra. The interior can be visited by prior appointment. https://www.rotadoromanico.com/en/Monuments/monastery-of-saint-peter-of-cete/
