A chapel in Welt was already built in 1113 as a branch of St. Christian's Church in Garding. It was destroyed by the Dithmarschers in 1415. By the end of the 15th century, the originally late Romanesque nave was rebuilt in Gothic brickwork. Around 1567, a freestanding wooden bell tower was built next to the church, which was replaced in 1908 by the Neo-Gothic church tower added directly to the west side.

The Protestant Church of St. Martin in Vollerwiek belongs to the 6 churches on the Eiderstedt peninsula, for which there was a 900th anniversary celebration in 2013. And yet, St. Martin's is something special compared to the other 5 old churches: St. Martin's Church has already been extensively renovated and restored - most recently from 2010 to 2012.
