Tips from the Community

September 11, 2025, Ladeira da Velha Coastal Hot Spring

Thermal water, approximately 30 degrees Celsius warm, bubbles from the ground, filled with carbon dioxide, is collected in the pool. When the thermal spring was in use, a roof was placed on the still existing side walls of the pool to protect the water from ocean waves in winter. The water stored in this pool was drained through drains for baths and drinking, and was said to have healing properties for leprosy and arthritis, among other things. Only about 10 years ago, the hiking trail was created to make the pool accessible to the public again; a possible new (tourist) use is under discussion. A very exciting place; the strenuous climb afterwards is worth it!

There are some nice hikes around here, but there is a mistake: Ponta da Ferraria is not here, but at the western end of Sao Miguel, here there is only an abandoned basin.

Very easy trail, not extremely interesting compared to others on the island but if you have time I recommend it

From km 3 onwards, the trail may be interrupted by a cow pasture. Unfortunately, we turned back...

There is a special wooden tower here so that you can get a better view of the rocky coast in front of you. The climb is worth it.
