The path to the waterfall is currently closed. There has been a landslide and two fallen trees are crossing the path. Going around them is child's play. The wooden path afterwards is however rather a danger, as it has partially collapsed. Hiking boots and sure-footedness are mandatory here! For attentive hikers, the path is doable. (April 2026)

Beautiful but still tough hike! Definitely recommended. We did it with a 6 and 10-year-old

Between two tunnels is the entrance to a short trail toward the Cascata da Ribeira Quente waterfall. The trail was impassable (summer 2025). Walking through the stream, you can still get close to the waterfall.

An adventurous path leads from the parking lot, which is located inside the tunnel, through the first of the tunnels (so please be very careful! - even if the drivers warn you by constantly honking their horns👍🏻). The waterfall can already be seen between the two tunnels. You can also walk further. However, the path is rocky, and you have to walk through the river to get closer. Waterproof shoes are helpful. But it's definitely a highlight.

At this point, you'll have to pay a 4-euro entrance fee, which allows you to visit the garden and hike about 1.5km past mammoth trees to the Salto do Rosal waterfall. The park is very beautiful, but keep in mind that the actual hike is already several kilometers long, and the walk to the waterfall and back adds an additional 3-4 kilometers.

At the end of the hiking trail you will come across a small waterfall. If you open the gate at the end you can see the waterfall directly.

Ribeira Quente is known for the unique Cascata da Ribeira Quente, situated between two road tunnels. Other significant waterfalls nearby include Prego Waterfall, considered one of the most stunning in the Azores, and Rosal Waterfall, located within the Mata-Jardim José do Canto.
Cascata da Ribeira Quente is unique due to its thermal origin, with water originating from springs inside the island. It also features a high concentration of iron, which gives the river and rocks beautiful colors. The waterfall is dramatically visible from the middle of a road tunnel, and a short, rocky walk leads to its base.
Yes, the hike to Prego Waterfall is generally considered doable for most, including families, despite some uphill climbs. Additionally, the José do Canto Woodland Garden, which houses Rosal Waterfall, is listed as family-friendly.
The hike to Prego Waterfall is considered an intermediate trail. It involves walking through forest trails and streams, with some uphill climbs. Visitors recommend having a bit of fitness and being prepared for potentially slippery and muddy conditions, especially after rain.
