The aforementioned soldier was a radio operator on a Halifax JP 224 aircraft that set off from Campo Casale air base in southern Italy towards occupied Poland on the evening of April 23, 1944. The purpose of the crew was to drop supplies for a Home Army outpost near Opole Lubelskie. During the flight, the aircraft malfunctioned and crashed near the village of Tarnogóra, north of Nowa Sarzyna. Just before the crash, the seven-person crew managed to evacuate the Halifax with the help of parachutes. Four of the pilots were rescued and hidden by local members of the Peasant Battalions, and two were captured by the Germans. Walter Davis landed the furthest from the crash site. Not knowing the terrain, he set off in search of help. He reached Wola Zarczycka, where he was taken over by Home Army soldiers from the Łańcut District. Communication between the British and the Poles was possible thanks to James Bloom. He was a fellow countryman of Davis and an escaped prisoner of war from a German camp, who was active in the local conspiracy under the pseudonym "Antek".
