To the northeast of Markteinersheim, Speckfeld Castle was built around 1200 by the Counts of Speckfeld on the old Nuremberg-Würzburg-Frankfurt Reichsstrasse (today's B 8). It was first mentioned in a document in 1226.
In 1412 Elisabeth von Hohenlohe gave the castle to the Limpurg taverns. Destroyed and plundered several times (in 1525 in the Peasants 'War and by the Swedes during the 30 Years' War in 1618/48), the castle was abandoned in 1693. The Limpurg taverns move into their new castle in Einersheim.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Rechtern-Limpurg-Speckfeld, but it was falling into disrepair. Today only a 15 m high wall of the former gate tower remains of the castle. The castle cellar is still inhabited: bats regularly hibernate here.

Originally, a rival castle to Hinterfrankenberg Castle stood here in 1254, with which the Nuremberg burgraves wanted to secure their territory. The Hinterfrankenberg castle ruins are a fascinating destination for anyone who wants to combine history and nature. The remains of the former castle are idyllically situated on a hill and offer a great view of the surrounding landscape. Although only ruins remain of the castle, you can feel the breath of times gone by here. The old walls, some of which have been reclaimed by nature, are particularly impressive. Sturdy shoes are recommended as the paths to the ruins can be uneven in places. A visit is particularly worthwhile for history buffs and hikers looking for a quiet place to linger. Don't forget to bring your binoculars - the view is worth it!

Hinterfrankenberg Castle is the second castle on the Frankenberg, next to Frankenberg Castle (Vorderfrankenberg Castle). Both structures are only about 62 meters apart. Hinterfrankenberg Castle is the older of the two structures. At its maximum length, the castle was 230 meters long. The castle area was protected by several outer castles and ditches. The actual main castle consisted of a ring with five towers. A round keep stood free in the castle courtyard. After it was used as a quarry in the 19th century, the double tower, two vault remains, the formwork of a well and a single wall remainder have been preserved.
