Vistula Cycling Route WTR Oświęcim–Miętków

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A very good quality, asphalt section of the bicycle route along the Vistula embankments.
There is a view of the Vistula River from the route.
We liked the stage from Oświęcim the most - the first-class surface on the Vistula embankment is a recipe for the success of this route. On both sides of the embankment, my eyes were filled with vigorous green, and my nose was dizzy with the scent of blooming trees and flowers. The area around the route is a kingdom of nature due to the limited human interference in the floodplain.

In the meadows we searched for pheasants absorbed in courtship, hares flashed in the fields, and we accidentally scared a herd of deer out of the bushes. Sometimes the route rubbed against the forest wall, other times it approached small towns, but we still saw the thin thread of the Vistula and the spring nature exploding in its surroundings.

Railway bridge in Okleśna

Highlight • Bridge

A railway bridge over the Vistula River in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, connecting Okleśna (Chrzanów County) with the Place (Wadowice County). It is situated on the route of the railway line No. 103 connecting the Trzebinia station with the Wadowice station.
The bridge was built in 1899.
In 1905, a railway watchtower was put into use in the immediate vicinity of the bridge.
During World War II, it was destroyed by the retreating German troops.
In 1946 it was rebuilt.
On October 7, 2002, passenger traffic on the bridge was suspended.
The railway bridge in Okleśna is the only sensible alternative for pedestrians and cyclists who want to get to the other side of the Vistula in this area.
The bridge connects the Spytkowice commune with the Alwernia commune, and thus the Wadowice and Chrzanów poviats.
The nearest ferry crossing is located a few kilometers below, in Spytkowice.
It is even further to the bridges to Łączany or Podolia.
In 2018, the bridge was a film set for the production of Legions directed by Maciej Pawlicki.

Ruins of Lipowiec Castle

Highlight • Castle

Lipowiec Castle is open to visitors again. Extensive security work has been completed. The ruins can now be safely viewed. However, some parts are not open to the public.

The high keep is accessible via a narrow stone spiral staircase. Two artillery loopholes have been restored in the keep and are now accessible on the way to the top viewing platform.

The last 3 meters must be climbed with the help of a permanently installed ladder. You are rewarded with a magnificent 360° view. A view that makes you want to hike in the surrounding forests.

The newly built, chic café does not detract from the ensemble at all. It blends well with the old ensemble. Admission costs 20 zloty (as of July 2025).

"The Church of St. Bartholomew in Poręba Wielka was built in the 16th century and is one of the oldest churches in the Silesian Foothills. The temple has the character of a late Gothic church of the Silesian variety. It consists of a nave and a narrower chancel closed on three sides with an added sacristy, covered with sheet metal. Inside the church you can admire late Gothic portals with lintels cut in the so-called donkey spines, and on the walls and ceilings there is Young Poland polychrome. Rococo altars, the pulpit and the organ prospect date back to the end of the 18th century, while the baptismal font is classicist."

Bukowica Nature Reserve — Bukowica Spring

Highlight • Natural Monument

In the area of the town of Zagórze (Babice commune) there is the Bukowica nature reserve. It includes a picturesque hill, built of Triassic limestone, in the western part of Garb Tenczyński. The reserve is to protect a fragment of the Carpathian beech forest with old beech trees and the local landscape. Among others, the following grow in the undergrowth: Daphne mezereum, lily of the valley, sweet woodruff. The reserve's attraction is a several-meter-long outcrop - a rock wall made of Triassic limestone, in which numerous openings of small caves are visible. There is also a spring here. Local legends tell about the taste and health properties of the local water. According to one of them, a golden duck swims to the spring through an underground corridor from the castle in Lipowiec. King Jan III Sobieski and his army stopped here several hundred years ago on his way to Vienna. The braver ones tell stories about how the miraculous water from the Zagorze spring later contributed to the victory over the Turks.

A superb cycle path which is, among other things, the EuroVelo 4 which crosses Poland. I realize that I can take it all the way to Krakow, my final destination, but the wind is blowing hard today and the path is elevated, so I am not at all sheltered from the wind. I decide to leave it further on to follow my initial itinerary.
