Vistula Cycling Route WTR Oświęcim–Miętków

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A very good quality, asphalt section of the bicycle route along the Vistula embankments.
There is a view of the Vistula River from the route.
We liked the stage from Oświęcim the most - the first-class surface on the Vistula embankment is a recipe for the success of this route. On both sides of the embankment, my eyes were filled with vigorous green, and my nose was dizzy with the scent of blooming trees and flowers. The area around the route is a kingdom of nature due to the limited human interference in the floodplain.

In the meadows we searched for pheasants absorbed in courtship, hares flashed in the fields, and we accidentally scared a herd of deer out of the bushes. Sometimes the route rubbed against the forest wall, other times it approached small towns, but we still saw the thin thread of the Vistula and the spring nature exploding in its surroundings.

Oświęcim Castle

Highlight • Castle

Castle in Oświęcim - a building erected in the Middle Ages on the top of a hill, on the right bank of the Soła river in Oświęcim.
The castle consists of an early gothic bergfried tower built at the end of the 13th century and a two-storey, basement building erected on a rectangular plan (old castle wing from the beginning of the 16th century) and a link from 1929–1931 built on the site of older buildings. A significant part of the fortifications was taken by the river - which changed its course for centuries.
On the castle hill there are remains of defensive walls and bastions. The royal castle was located in the second half of the 16th century in the Silesian poviat of the Kraków voivodeship. There are two tunnels under the castle: the older one (built before 1914) and the other one drilled by the Germans (1940–1944). This tunnel served as an air-raid shelter.
The first mentions of the Oświęcim castellany come from the period when it was incorporated into the Duchy of Opole (1177–1179). The reconstruction and fortification of the castle are attributed to the son of Mieszko Plątonogi, Prince Kazimierz. This is evidenced by archaeological discoveries near the tower confirming the existence of a brick structure on the castle hill in the first half of the 13th century.

Porąbka Dam

Highlight • Monument

The dam in Porąbka, on the Sola River, looks both impressive and elegant. In the interwar period, when it was created, it was considered the pinnacle of technological advancement. The future president of the Republic of Poland, Gabriel Narutowicz, worked on the design of the dam. It was built with enormous effort to prevent catastrophic floods in the Soła Valley. After World War II, a small hydroelectric power plant was built at the dam.
Works were supposed to start in 1914, but World War I thwarted these plans.
The subject of construction returned immediately after its completion. The dam design was consulted with Gabriel Narutowicz, the creator of the dam on the Aar River in Mühlenberg, Switzerland. The narrowing between the Żaru and Zasolnica massifs was chosen as the site of the Soła dam. Construction began in 1921. However, due to scarce funds, it was repeatedly discontinued. Soła was also not idle and was destroying the effects of human efforts. The work started again from the hoof in 1934. The project was supervised by an outstanding specialist - engineer Jerzy Skrzyński. The company Frankopol was building. For the purposes of the investment, a small power plant was opened nearby. The latest technological achievements were used - e.g. waterproof cement from Goleszów. 2,500 workers and several hundred juniors passed through the construction site. The dam is 260 m long and 37.4 high; throughput - 1690 cubic meters. The capacity of the Międzybrodzkie Lake was calculated at 32.2 million cubic meters. The cost of the project was over PLN 20 million at that time! The construction site was visited by President Ignacy Mościcki himself. The opening ceremony in December 1936 was attended, among others, by Deputy Prime Minister Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski and Cardinal Adam Sapieha. In the 1950s, a hydroelectric power plant was commissioned at the dam. Currently, it has a capacity of 12.6 MW.

Bielsko-Biała Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

Town Hall in Bielsko-Biała - a neo-Renaissance, historic town hall located at the Town Hall Square in Bielsko-Biała, in the Biała Krakowska district.
It was built in the years 1895–1897 according to the design of Emanuel Rost junior. Originally, it housed the city council of Biała, the Municipal Savings Bank and several other institutions in Biała, as well as the apartments of officials.
Since 1951, it has been the seat of the President of the City, the City Council and some departments of the City Hall in Bielsko-Biała.
In the 1890s, the Austro-Hungarian authorities of Biała decided that the town hall building built in 1827, situated at the market square (today the Polish Army Square), was insufficient for the dynamically developing city. It was decided to build a new building, finding a sponsor in the Komunalna Kasa Oszczędności - a local bank established in 1883.
In February 1894, the management of KKO announced an architectural competition for the design of the building, which was supposed to have two functions - to house a bank and a town hall. The competition assumptions precisely defined the requirements that a modern building was to meet. Emphasis was placed on both functionality and grandeur of the town hall. It was supposed to be a municipal public building with a clock tower as its hallmark.
The Town Hall is one of the most magnificent public buildings in Bielsko-Biała.
It was built on the plan of an elongated rectangle. The symmetrical body is accentuated by the central break in the vestibule and the Council Hall, topped with a separate, mansard roof and smaller corner breaks (the north-eastern breaks into a tower). On the west side, the building has two short wings, giving it a horseshoe shape. In the southern part there is a square well with a side staircase.

A superb cycle path which is, among other things, the EuroVelo 4 which crosses Poland. I realize that I can take it all the way to Krakow, my final destination, but the wind is blowing hard today and the path is elevated, so I am not at all sheltered from the wind. I decide to leave it further on to follow my initial itinerary.

There are several food and drink options on site. Unfortunately, everything was closed in the evening, including the restrooms, making it difficult to get water. However, the views are spectacular.

Żar is a very good viewing point. From the top of the mountain there is a panorama of the Żywiec Basin with Lake Żywiecki, the peaks of the Żywiec Beskids and the Silesian Beskids rising above it, and the Magurka Wilkowicka Group belonging to the Little Beskids, but located on the other side of the Soła River. In this group, almost all the peaks are visible - from Przyszop in the south, through Rogacz, Magurka Wilkowicka, Chrobacza Łąka to Bujakowski Groń and Zasolnioca in the north. Above Lake Czanieckie in the north, you can see the Silesian Foothills with its towns and chimneys of industrial plants and Bukowski Groń, and in the east, above the crown of the artificial reservoir, the peaks of Złota Góra, Kiczera, Cisowa Grapa and Potrójna. At the foot of the mountain there is the "Żar" Mountain Gliding School and paragliding is practiced

The castle in Oświęcim experienced its greatest glory during the reign of Duke Casimir I at the beginning of the 15th century. Its brick tower was described at that time even by Jan Długosz himself in “History of Poland…”. This place was also visited by many distinguished figures over the centuries. Among them was the future Queen of Poland, Bona Sforza d’Aragona, travelling to Krakow from distant Bari for her wedding with King Sigismund I.
