Tyniec Benedictine Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

Abbey The Benedictine monastery in Tyniec was founded in the first half of the 11th century as a Romanesque church complex and is the oldest operating monastery in Poland. Numerous reconstructions have changed the original character of the building and, next to the Romanesque elements, you can see the Gothic presbytery and the Baroque nave, with particularly valuable altarpieces by Francesco Placidi. During the partitions in 1816, the abbey was liquidated. The monks returned to Tyniec only in July 1939. Unfortunately, the reconstruction of the complex could take place only after the Second World War, and the status of the abbey was restored to the monastery in 1968. The Benedictines conduct a wide range of activities in the abbey, including a publishing house, a hotel, a restaurant and a sales center where you can buy various specialties made according to the monastic recipe: preserves, honeys, teas, herbs and liqueurs. The Institute of Culture operates in the renovated wing of the library. You can visit the church, the cloisters and the lapidarium with an interesting exhibition of monuments related to the history of the abbey.

The Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow is one of the most important tourist attractions in Poland and a must-see for any history buff. For centuries, it was the seat of kings, and today you can visit the representative chambers, armoury, treasury and cathedral with the tombs of the rulers. The castle is located on a hill above the Vistula River, in the city centre, which makes it easy to get there by bike, although it is worth expecting heavy pedestrian traffic and a ban on entering the hill itself. It is best to leave your bike on the Vistula boulevards and continue your tour on foot.
