Church of St. John the Theologian, Terespol

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Of the Apostle John the Theologian - an Orthodox parish church in Terespol. It belongs to the Terespol deanery of the Lublin-Chełm diocese of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church. The temple is located in the eastern part of the city, at 2 Cerkiewna Street.

The church was built in the 18th century as a Uniate temple. Until the January Uprising, it was a strong Uniate center, and the local clergy were associated with the Polish independence movement. In 1875, as a result of the liquidation of the Uniate diocese of Chełm, the church in Terespol was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. Most of the faithful did not accept this decision and stopped attending the temple altogether. After the change of religion, the building was renovated twice - in 1881 and in the years 1897–1898. During the second renovation, a free-standing belfry was erected next to the church, on which a bell co-funded by Tsar Nicholas II was hung, and new frescoes were made inside it.

After Poland regained independence, the opening of the church was not planned. In 1926 it was made available to the faithful as the seat of the Neo-Uniate parish. In 1941 she joined the Orthodox Church again and has been active in its structures ever since.

Cieleśnica Palace

Highlight • Historical Site

With the columns in the entrance area, the Cielesnica Palace is reminiscent of a plantation home in the south of the USA. The landlord took great pleasure in speaking German with us. When I asked if Charlie Whatts would stay here during Janow Podlaski's horse auction, he unfortunately answered no. Charlie always lives with the forester, but where exactly is the best-kept secret in town!

A well-kept, small hotel in a beautiful palace. Good places to stop on the way and use the restaurant/cafe.

The beginnings of the Orthodox Church in Terespol date back to at least the 16th century. After the proclamation of the Union of Brest (1596), a Pauline monastery was established in the village, the purpose of which was to persuade the Orthodox population to accept Catholicism. The Paulines wanted the administrator of the church in Terespol to show devotion to the cause of the union. The parish of the Byzantine-Ukrainian rite functioned until the second half of the 19th century. Also the church of St. John the Theologian, erected in 1745, was adapted to the needs of the Uniate liturgy - the temple was equipped with organs, a pulpit, pews, confessionals, bells, and a monstrance. Practiced i.a. rosary services and Corpus Christi celebrations. In the period preceding the liquidation of the union in southern Podlasie (early 1870s), the Greek Catholic parish in Terespol had about 950 believers. https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parafia_%C5%9Bw._Aposto%C5%82a_Jana_Teologa_w_Terespolu
