Książ Castle

Highlight • Castle

An audio-guided tour of this impressive castle takes about an hour and a half and is highly recommended. Afterwards, you'll have the opportunity to explore the beautiful terraced gardens and linger there for a while. If you like, you can also explore the walk-through area of the underground passages and cellars built during World War II.

If all this has worked up an appetite, stop off at the restaurant of the Hotel Książ. It's located at the front of the castle complex (in the outbuildings), and you can indulge in Polish specialties on the beautiful terrace.

Stary Książ Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

Very interesting castle ruin that was built as a romantic castle ruin. By delving into its history, it will be possible to understand the previous sentence. The castle was erected as an artificial castle ruin at the end of the 18th century (construction started in 1794). The building was to resemble the ruins of a castle and was to be a kind of tourist attraction, which was to relieve the Książ Castle from tourists. An interesting fact is that as a result of archaeological research it is known that the Stary Książ Castle was built on the ruins of a real medieval castle, which was probably built at the end of the 13th century. During the research, it was also discovered that this medieval castle was built on the site of a stronghold dating from the 9th - 10th centuries.

Cisy Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

Cisy Castle north of Wałbrzych is impressive. It is believed to have been built in the 13th century and then of course rebuilt. The impressive ruins (these are so-called permanent ruins) allow you to imagine how big this castle once was. In its heyday, there were probably at least three storeys in the walls and it looks like there was also quite a large courtyard. The easiest way to enter the castle is via a convenient path. Everything is free and it will take about 20 minutes to see everything.

The name of this small lake comes from Princess Daisy Hochberg von Pless (1873–1943), the last owner of Książ. It was one of her favorite places to relax. Interesting ruins here include a viewing tower with a hunting lodge, which the princess ordered built here. The lake itself, sometimes called Zielony, was created in the 19th century as a result of quarrying reef limestone on the slopes of Mount Witosz. The lake has a false bottom due to sediments, dead trees and vegetation. The real depth may be as much as 23 meters.

The castle was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, probably on the initiative of Bolko II the Small. During the Hussite Wars at the beginning of the 15th century, the castle was captured and destroyed by insurgents. It was rebuilt and modernized, adapting it to the conditions of artillery defense. During the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), Cisy was captured and burned by Swedish troops. The abandoned castle quickly fell into ruin. It was not until 1927 that the first attempts were made to save the remains of the castle. It was then possible to recreate the main spatial layout, secure the ruins of the residential building, level the tower crown and reconstruct the external entrance gate with the bridge. Further renovation attempts were made in the 1960s, securing the castle to a state of permanent ruin.

Moving around the park itself by bike is difficult, the overgrown gravel paths have a barrier on the trail and in some places you have to walk.
