The current, late Gothic structure of the church was built on the site of an earlier structure. Its final architectural form (without the later "Holy Stairs") was achieved in the early 16th century (around 1538), as a single-nave, oriented brick structure. At the beginning of the 18th century (around 1722–1725), a unique structure in Poland was added to the church – the Holy Stairs (Scala Sancta), modeled on the Roman steps leading to the Sancta Sanctorum Chapel. The steps became a major pilgrimage destination. A pilgrimage route with chapels of the Passion of the Lord was also built around the church and the steps, creating a local Calvary.

The railway station in Sławęcice was established in 1906. It was built alongside the construction of the state-owned line from Góra to Głogów. In 1914, expansion of the station began, which involved the addition of a second, parallel track of the private Górowska Railway from the Góra side.
