Wooden Windmill (Kozlak) in Kocilew near Ożarów

Highlight • Monument

The windmill in Ożarów, and more precisely in Kocilewo near Ożarów, was built by the Kowalski family in 1914. Roman Kowalski becomes the owner of the perpetual and rental lease of the milling settlement in Kocilewo in 1911, after being transferred to him by his father, Marcin, who uses it until World War II.

After 1945, the windmill was run by Henryk Kowalski, son of Roman. The facility, which is a private enterprise, has not been approved by the authorities, and in 1960 the Presidium of the Provincial National Council in Łódź prohibits the grinding of grain into flour. Henryk Kowalski becomes the last miller in Ożarów. The closed windmill now serves only as a storage building. The unused mill was falling into ruin. First, his wings were removed due to the danger they could pose. The following years brought the collapse of the roof structure, the tearing off of the embankment with the fire wheel, the ruin of the floors, formwork and wall structures. Windmill during the reconstruction This state lasted until 1996, when the windmill was completely ruined. At that time, on the initiative of the Court Interiors Museum in Ożarów and the Society of Friends of the Manor Interiors Museum in Ożarów, actions were initiated to save the windmill. This initiative met with understanding at the Wieluń Town and Commune Office. We managed to find funds to buy the windmill site and the area around it.

The tower played a defensive role during the late 16th century when Habsburg forces approached the city, and it survived centuries of decay before being comprehensively restored in the second decade of the 21st century with EU funding.

Today it houses two permanent exhibitions: "In the Chamber of the Wieluń Executioner" showcasing the history and tools of local executioners, and "History of Weaponry in Medieval and Old Polish Times" focusing on the military history of Wieluń's residents.

A place of patriotic events. On September 1, 1939, at 4:40 am, German bombers raided a defenseless city, brutally killing several hundred of its inhabitants and destroying about 75% of the city, including the hospital.
