The Shannonbridge Fortifications sit menacingly and strategically on the banks of the Shannon at a crux river crossing point. These buildings are quite iconic in status and some of the best preserved Napoleonic fortifications out there. They were built by the British in 1810 and the fort protected the bridge against a possible French invasion. Things are a tad calmer these days and there is a free exhibition, river Café and gift shop along with a self guided tour around the fort.

This impressive ruin is what is left of a mid-eighteenth century Palladian Revival house which was transformed in the Tudor Revival in 1922. Sadly burnt in 1922, only the stone remains.
