Hukvaldy Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle ruins of Hochwald (Hard Hukvaldy) are a particularly large castle complex from the 13th century. The journey is definitely worth it.
Entry costs 100 kc (as of August 2023). You can park in 2 paid parking lots.
The ascent to the 140 m high castle hill leads over a paved hiking trail with a moderate incline.
You enter the castle via the outer bailey and you might think: "Is that all?". No, there is more to come because the castle is divided into 4 separate castle sections. The castle sections are separated by moats, walls, gatehouses and bulwarks. The fourth section of the castle was the actual center of power. It was not a prince who ruled here, but a bishop. Please make sure to walk up the many steps at the Palace so that you can see the size of this particularly protected area. The 360° panoramic view from the top is also worthwhile.

Hukvaldy Beech Trees

Highlight • Natural Monument

Seven beech trees (Fagus sylvatica) with a trunk circumference of 335–465 cm, a height of 25–30 m and crown diameters of 18–25 m were declared memorial trees.

The beeches are part of the vegetation that was planted after 1730 on the then bare castle hill. The beeches formed a massive root system to ensure stability on the steep slope. Erosion has exposed the roots and their entanglements, swellings and above-ground loops covered with light gray bark are striking in their beauty.

Be considerate - moving the hillside and roots will increase erosion and damage the memorial trees.

Cycle path along the Ostravice

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Very nice bike path along the Ostravice from Ostrava to Frýdek-Místek. Almost completely car-free, few sections on small streets
Asphalted, beautiful route along the river, past the legacies of the coal industry era with heaps and old railway lines.
You could start using this cycle path directly at the Silesian-Ostrava Castle.

Highlight • Summit

Finally, a peak with views—since it's in a clearing, you can see everything from there: the Silesian Beskids and the southern part of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. It's beautiful. There's also a sign with a panoramic photo, so you can easily identify all the mountains ahead.

Smrk Summit

Highlight • Summit

The top part of the massif (cca from 1000 masl) is a nature reserve - here meaning that you should only use tourist marked paths. The "red" path from Ostravice is also a lot nicer than the "in the upper part illegal" shortcut from Nad Holubcanou to the summit.

A stone mound was established in 1946 in memory of five Ostrava scouts who were shot by the Gestapo in Cieszyn, Poland, in April 1945. Meetings at Ivančen are held regularly on April 24. “This cross was erected on October 6, 1946, by the council of the 30th Junák Squad in Ostrava in memory of the scout leader Vládi Čermák and rowers Vládi Pach, Otto Klein, Milan Rotter and Quido Němec, who were shot by the Gestapo on April 24, 1945 in Cieszyn, Poland, on the feast of St. George, the patron saint of scouts around the world, at the end of the war. Place a stone on their mound.” https://www.okobeskyd.cz/?p=10067

Wielka Czantoria is one of the most popular places for mountain runs and trips in the Silesian Beskids, with an attractive approach from both Ustroń and the Czech Nýdek. The route to the summit is about 5 km long in one direction and offers demanding approaches, technical descents and beautiful views of the surrounding ranges. At the top, there is a viewing tower, a shelter and the possibility of replenishing supplies. Light trail shoes with aggressive tread will be best for the route, because in wet weather the trail can be slippery and the rocks treacherous.
