Lovran Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

The pretty town of Lovran is located six kilometers south of Opatija and is named after the evergreen and healing laurel. Lovran can be reached on foot along the promenade from Opatja. Ideal for those who seek tranquility and want to spend their holidays surrounded by well-tended gardens. The small town has an impressive historical heritage, a centuries-old tourism tradition, making it an ideal vacation spot. The old town is on a small peninsula. The houses in the old fortified town lean against the town wall, of which only a few original parts have survived. Only a tower and the Stubiza Gate have survived. The city developed at the same time as Opatija during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The exclusive villas also date from this period.

This is the southern part of a 12 km long waterfront promenade, partly carved into the rock. This part goes from Opadija to Lovran and was completed in 1911.
The path was only named Franz-Joseph-Promenade in 1996, when people began to reflect on the touristic Habsburg heritage. In the Yugoslav period it was called Matko-Laginja-Promenade and during the Italian rule (from 1918) Lungomare.
Along the promenade are still many more or less well-preserved, pompous villas from the imperial period and in Opatija hotels from the time when it was a fashionable Austro-Hungarian seaside resort.

The section is a bit strenuous but manageable. In a few places you need to be able to walk confidently.

Very steep and slippery. It's impossible without sturdy shoes and poles. Extremely difficult to walk after rain.

I went swimming with my family every day at the rocky swimming spots. There were always ladders there to get in and out safely.
