Camp Velebit

Highlight • Rest Area

The Velebit campsite is one of my favorites of this trip. This campsite is magical. There are possibilities to rent hobbit houses, to camp in a more or less wild way. It is without numbered slots, as elves and sprites don't like to be boxed. There are many community places, starting with the kitchen. The surroundings are superb and offer hikes of great beauty. You meet great people there and the sky is clear and bright. In short a paradise I tell you

Ljubičko Brdo

Highlight • Summit

The mountain village of Baske Oštarje is the starting point for hikes in the mountain region of Velebit. You reach the village after a short winding ride on a pass and 900 meters from Karlobag. For those who want to see and experience something completely different to the beach holiday, it is worth a day trip with a hike or a stay of several days. There are hostels and a campsite I can only recommend.

The trek up the ridge over several small grassy summits is easy and can be done up to the cross at Ljubičko brdo for each of the 300 meters of altitude on steep mountain trails. The trail starts at the church in Basque Oštarje and rises from the southeast through Buchenwald.
Those who are sure-footed and have no problems with short climbs can simply follow the path at the summit of Ljubičko brdo. Then it goes on to the next rock summit and down into the forest on a gravel road. From there back to Baške Ostarje.

Karlobag Promenade

Highlight • Trail

Croats settled in the area in the 6th and 7th centuries AD. In 925 Karlobag came to the newly established Kingdom of Croatia under King Tomislav. In the year 1000, the Venetian fleet defeated Croatia. Karlobag as well as some other east Adriatic coastal towns (except Dubrovnik) came temporarily under Venetian administration. King Petar Kresimir IV recaptured the city. After the collapse of Venice in 1797 and the short reign of France under Napoleon (1809-1813), Austria took control of Karlobag and it was assigned to the Crown Land of Croatia. In the 18th century, Karlobag - called Bag at the time - was, along with Senj, an important transport and trading center below the Velebit massif. Later Karlobag came to the Kingdom of Croatia within the Danube Monarchy. In 1919 Croatia and with it Karlobag were integrated into the state of the "South Slavs" (Yugoslavia). From 1945 Karlobag belonged to the Socialist Republic of Croatia, since 1991 to the Republic of Croatia.

Stunning sea views

Highlight • Viewpoint

The view from climbing this winding road that starts at sea level and climbs to over 900 meters in altitude is a marvel. Each lace makes you forget the fatigue in the legs, so much your eyes feast. However, it is safer to do this route in the morning or in the evening, otherwise beware of the heat wave.

Church of St. Barromaus
The remains of the Church of St. Charles Borromeo are located at the southern end of the village. From the once built on the foundations of St. John's Church, only a part of the wall and the belfry have survived after a bombing raid.

Huk from Kaplina

Highlight • Climb

Relatively easy to reach from Ljubičko Brdo, but in the other direction there are some climbing sections where you definitely need a head for heights. Good footwear and agility are a must here!

We were here several times in June 2024. Great food, friendly staff and a pleasant garden restaurant. The grill plate and the cordon bleu are amazing. Very good value for money
