Motovun Old Town

Beautiful, small mountain village with narrow streets and small shops where local specialties can be tasted and purchased.

Motovun Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

All tunnels on the Parenzana trail have (solar-powered) lights that turn on when you approach them. It's not mandatory, but it's helpful if you have your own lights for the longer tunnels such as this one near Motovun. This tunnel was one of the longest and a bit darker than the rest - lights will turn on as you approach them but you really have to step into the dark before they do.

Historic steps up to Motovun

Highlight • Trail

You can park at the bottom of Motovun and then wonderfully follow the old paths all the way to the top. The way is not far and definitely worth it. I would definitely take the old ways and not go up via the road. In my opinion, the shuttle bus is not necessary if you are good on foot. The circular route from the petrol station down in the village to the top and back is only about 3km long.

Climb from Livade to Oprtalj

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

One of the most beautiful climbs in the area! Most of the time it goes uphill with a gradient of around 5%, only on short sections it gets a little steeper with up to 10%. There is negligible motorized traffic and the surface is in a passable condition, so you can also enjoy the descent to some extent.

St. Stephen's Church Bell Tower, Motovun

Highlight • Religious Site

The Baroque St. Stephen's Church in the mountain town of Motovun was built between 1580 and 1614, but it only acquired its current appearance at the end of the 18th century. The adjacent bell tower dates back to the 13th century. A look inside is also worthwhile.

Mirna River

Highlight • River

Mirna is the longest river in Istria with a length of more than 50 km. The importance of the river for this region is undisputed: from mills to transport, from sales to sports activities. Today the Mirna River flows through an artificially created river bed while being surrounded by a beautiful setting of forests, hills and towns. The source of the river is in a small village called Kotli.

State Road D44

Highlight • Cycleway

Great road that invites you to speed evenly. Exactly, good asphalt, little traffic depending on the time and very clear. Beautifully landscaped. After Buzet to Roc it goes slightly uphill. Despite the flat route of the 44, there are a few opportunities to collect a few meters in altitude.
Again and again you can leave the 44, for example at the junction to Motovun or the opposite "Livade Climb". Leaving the roundabout in the direction of Zudetici-Vizinada, it goes up again. If you stay on the 44, it meanders gently and in two lanes at about 6% up the mountain and offers the option of driving via Brtonigla to Buje via the turnoff to Nova Vas.
In short: lots of options and lots of fun. :)
