Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian

Highlight • Religious Site

The parish church of Saints Cusma and Damian stands on a square on the seashore.
It is a baroque, single-nave Gothic building with a rectangular sanctuary and sacristy. The Gothic portal, in whose lunette the namesakes of the church are depicted in high relief, has been preserved. The church was built in the late Gothic style of the 15th century. Two spolia from the 8th century on the outer wall probably belong to an older construction phase of the church. A single bell tower was built next to the church, ending in arched biphores and a pyramid. The interior of the church is equipped with five marble altars on which there are wooden altarpieces. The northern wall of the church was decorated with a painting of the Last Supper by the famous Zadar painter Zorzi Ventura from 1598. The main altar also shows a solid painting - The Resurrected Man with Saints - an oil painting on canvas, with all the hallmarks of the Venetian painter Leonardo Corone, which was created around 1590. On the walls of the sacristy you can see remains of frescoes, probably the work of Friulian masters from the 16th century.

The drive leads along the beach promenade and the view is great. The paths are easy to navigate even for beginners.
Unfortunately, the suspension bridge was removed in summer 2020.
Unfortunately, nobody knows whether this will be rebuilt.

Basilica of St. Mary Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

For us, this was perhaps the most moving place on this visit to Brijuni. An early Christian basilica dating back to the 4th or 5th century AD, its columns still retain ancient Christian iconography from the early centuries.

A beautiful archaeological site featuring a Byzantine castrum and its evolution over the centuries. The area adjacent to the shore is noteworthy, with clearly visible olive pressing areas and concrete tanks for collecting the oil.

Asphalt is ok. Traffic is available. Probably also a matter of luck, as many people are on their way from the highway to Faszana.

Perhaps the most evocative site of the entire visit to Brijuni Island. Ruins of an early Christian basilica dating back to the 4th or 5th century AD. Around the year 1000, it became the home of the Knights Templar, who guarded it until the order was dissolved, with the construction of a monastery adjacent to the church. A large burial area was discovered near the church, giving an idea of how densely populated the nearby castrum was.

A wonderful archaeological area. In addition to the original Byzantine castrum, later layers can also be seen. Noteworthy is the area near the shore where olive pressing sites for olive oil production can be identified.
