Tauberbischofsheim Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

The market square, surrounded by Franconian half-timbered houses and the neo-Gothic town hall, forms the center of the city.
The neo-Gothic town hall was built from 1865 to 1867 and with this architectural style is a rarity in southern Germany. The facade, the staircase and the citizens' hall are particularly impressive. As a reminder of the earlier market times, the old city scales from 1775 were hung under the arcades of the town hall and since the renovation in 1989 a carillon has been playing several times a day. The tourist information is located on the ground floor and medals and awards from the successful fencers of the Olympic base and the IOC President Dr. Thomas Bach shown the most famous ambassador to his hometown Tauberbischofsheim.

The tower from the 13th and 15th centuries belongs to the Kurmainzisches Schloss, built around 1250, on the Schlossplatz. The eastern outbuildings of the palace from the 15th/16th Century are part of the former moated castle, of which 3 turrets are still standing. The tower tower (symbol of the city) has a total height of approx. 35 m, whereby the 28 m up to the summit is also the circumference. Inside there are 119 steps up to the tower room. The tower can be climbed as part of a guided tour and offers a wonderful view of the Tauber Valley and the town's incorporations.
A fountain with a toad forms the end of the castle courtyard in front of the mill canal. Here you can also see the remains of the city fortifications with part of the city wall and the hunger tower. Two cast-iron border pillars are reminiscent of modern times, one with the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy, the other with that of the Republic of Baden.

The Türmersturm (Turm Tower) is the city's most famous landmark and part of the former Electorate of Mainz Palace. It was built as a defensive tower in the 13th century and later expanded in the 15th century. With a height of approximately 35 meters and 119 steps up to the tower chamber, it once served the city guard to monitor the Tauber Valley and the surrounding area.
