December 4, 2023, Belfast Rail Trail

This crushed-gravel trail runs alongside the Passagassawakeag River. It's built on the railbed of what used to be the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad, and is well-suited for walking, running, and biking. If there is sufficient snow during the winter, you may find skiers and snowshoers here. It's easy to link Belfast Rail Trail with the harbor walk in downtown Belfast.

Belfast is a seaport at the the mouth of the Passagassawakeag River estuary on Belfast and Penobscot Bays that has a rich history that is reflected in architecture and many historic districts. Downtown Belfast has unique local shops, delicious restaurants, cozy coffee shops, and great museums and parks to explore and enjoy.

The Little River Community Trail is a real treasure of Belfast, leading past two reservoirs and along the Little River. It does involve a short stretch of walking along the road, but that part is more than balanced out by the overall pleasant, woods-and-river ambience of this hike.

October 10, 2023, Hawthorne statue

Can you spot the elephant standing on top of the Colonial Theatre building? That full-size statue is Hawthorne, the namesake of the Hawthorne Hike through downtown Belfast. There's also a Baby Hawthorne statue inside the theatre lobby.

October 10, 2023, Start of Hawthorne Hike

This is the typical starting point for the Hawthorne Hike, a walk through the streets of downtown Belfast that traces the shape of an elephant, tusk and all. The trail is named for Hawthorne, a full-sized elephant statue that sits atop the Colonial Theatre.

This part of the elephant's "tusk" is the only portion of the trail you'll walk more than once, as you make a small loop to help finish the elephant picture you're drawing (if you were to look down on the trail from an aerial view).
