The Augustinian Canons Regular monastery of All Saints, located in Pfaffengasse (today's Herrenstraße), stood on the site of the building from 1700 until its secularization. The monastery buildings were given to the Protestant community by the Grand Duke of Baden. On July 26, 1807, the first Protestant service in the city of Freiburg was held there, following several earlier services in the 17th century under Swedish-Weimar occupation. After the establishment of St. Ludwig's Church in 1839, the premises remained almost entirely empty for a long period. In 1851, they were converted into a military hospital and from 1871 onward used as barracks. With the completion of the Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Barracks in 1895, the building, now known as the Burgkaserne (Castle Barracks), became city property. In January 1900, planning began for a new building for the diocese. After the Catholic Church acquired the site in 1902, the monastery buildings were demolished. In February 1902, the new head of the Archdiocese's Building Office, Raimund Jeblinger, presented an initial set of plans with a cost estimate. Construction began in June 1903 with the laying of the foundations. The roof truss was erected in December 1904, and the facade cladding with Landstuhl sandstone was completed in July 1905. The building was consecrated by the client, Archbishop Thomas Nörber, in November 1906. Previously, the diocesan offices had been located where the Freiburg City Archives are now housed.[2] After being hit by a bomb in February 1945, the building had to be renovated. During this renovation, the facade and roof were partially redesigned. In the early 1960s, the attic was converted, which further altered the overall appearance. From 1933 to 2005, the building's entrance was located on Herrenstrasse, which meant visitors missed out on the particularly ornate main staircase. Since January 2006, the building has once again been accessed through its original main entrance on Schoferstrasse. Source: Wikipedia
