Durango, Colorado, is a famous mining town and railroad city that is an outdoor mecca today. There are towns of trails, roads, and paths for outdoor enthusiasts, and riding through downtown gives you a taste of old and new with old buildings and new businesses lining the streets.

This is a fantastic trailhead in the center of downtown Durango. There are restrooms, river access, and plenty of parking. From here you can cross the Fassbinder Bridge to follow the Animas River north or take a left at the water to wind south along the river through Durango.

The trailhead is a small gravel lot that immediately grants access to three different trails. You can head east toward Animas City Mountain Trails, west along the Jacobs Cliff Trail to the heart of Dalla Mountain Park, or straight up via the Cut Off Trail for a steep but expeditious ascent.

This is one of the relatively more shaded trails in the park. You can run most of the length of Dalla. At its north end the Junction Trail spits you out not too far from the lower access trailhead to the Perins Peak trails, so if you want you can cross the road and climb the ridge to explore westward.

November 21, 2023, Dalla Mountain Park

Dalla Mountain Park has a host of excellent shorter trails which weave back and forth around each other to give you the option to create many routes. The trail system connects with Animas City Mountain in a couple different places. Generally the trails here are a little more technical and offer sparse shade.

You are halfway up Animas City Mountain! Both of the trails leading south from here parallel each other along the ridge and head down to the east and south trailheads. The northern trails are roughly equal distance from the summit.

The trail here is a winding singletrack which yields fantastic views of Durango and the Animas River Valley as it skirts the rising shelf of Animas City Mountain. There is tree cover, but the brush is sparse and offers constant views.
