There are no easy walking routes to the summit, from the CIC Hut.

The Charles Inglis Clarke Memorial Hut (usually referred to as the CIC Hut) is an alpine-style mountain hut in the shadow of Ben Nevis' immense North Face. Owned by the Scottish Mountaineering Club, it gives mountaineers quick access to the many excellent routes on the face. It was built in 1928 by the parents of Charles Inglis Clark, who was killed during the First World War. Surprisingly given its location, there are 26 alpine beds, a full kitchen, a composting toilet and even a drying room. It's possible to stay at the hut, but advanced booking is essential as it is very popular, particularly in winter.

Originally a two room foresters house Gleann Dubh-Lighe is now managed by the Bothy Association. It burnt down in 2012 but has been re-built and the pine wood panels and cosy fire are nicer than the original. If you plan to stay here, please bring wood and make sure you leave it in better condition than when you arrived. It's also good practise to pay for membership of the MBA to help fund the upkeep.

I think the fact that this bothy has electricity and plenty of outlets cannot be overstated. Excellent!

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of huts and bothies can I find around Kilmallie?

The Kilmallie area, encompassing Fort William and Lochaber, offers a diverse range of shelters. You can find alpine-style mountain huts like the Charles Inglis Clark Memorial Hut (CIC Hut), traditional basic bothies such as Corryhully Bothy and Gleann Dubh Lighe Bothy, and even more luxurious 'glamping' options like The Posh Bothy. Youth hostels, such as the Glen Nevis Youth Hostel, also provide well-equipped accommodation.

Are there family-friendly accommodation options among the huts?

Yes, the Glen Nevis Youth Hostel is a flagship facility offering an experience comparable to a hotel, with both shared and private rooms, making it an excellent family-friendly base. The Posh Bothy also offers comfortable, fully equipped camping pods suitable for families.

What is the best time of year to visit huts around Kilmallie?

The best time depends on your activity. For serious climbers and winter mountaineers, the CIC Hut is particularly popular in winter due to its unparalleled access to Ben Nevis's North Face. Generally, late spring to early autumn offers more favorable weather for hiking and exploring the wider area, though the Scottish Highlands can be unpredictable year-round.

Do I need to book huts in advance or obtain permits?

For popular facilities like the Charles Inglis Clark Memorial Hut (CIC Hut), advanced booking is essential, especially in winter, due to high demand. The Alex MacIntyre Memorial Hut also requires booking, often for members of Mountaineering Scotland or the British Mountaineering Council. Traditional bothies like Invermallie Bothy, Corryhully Bothy, and Gleann Dubh Lighe Bothy are typically unlocked and free to use, operating on a first-come, first-served basis, but visitors should adhere to the 'Bothy Code'.

What outdoor activities can I do near these huts?

The Kilmallie area is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts. You can enjoy challenging mountain hikes, including routes up Ben Nevis. There are also extensive options for gravel biking and mountain biking, with trails ranging from easy to difficult. The region's lochs and rivers also offer opportunities for wild swimming and other water-based activities.

Are there pubs or cafes near the huts for refreshments?

Yes, the Ben Nevis Inn is a popular pub, restaurant, and hostel located near the start of the Ben Nevis routes, offering a cozy atmosphere and refreshments after a day out. The Glen Nevis Youth Hostel also provides facilities for guests.

What facilities can I expect at the huts and bothies?

Facilities vary significantly. The Charles Inglis Clark Memorial Hut (CIC Hut) is well-equipped with 26 alpine beds, a full kitchen, composting toilets, and a drying room. The Alex MacIntyre Memorial Hut offers electric lighting and heating, cooking facilities, showers, and WCs. Traditional bothies like Invermallie Bothy, Corryhully Bothy, and Gleann Dubh Lighe Bothy are more basic, providing shelter with four walls and a roof, often with a stove or open fire. Some, like Corryhully, even have electricity and a kettle.

What kind of terrain and difficulty can I expect on walks near Kilmallie huts?

The terrain around Kilmallie is diverse, ranging from challenging mountain paths to more moderate forest trails. Walks can involve significant elevation gain, especially around Ben Nevis and the Mamores, with routes graded from moderate to difficult. For example, the 'Lochan a’ Choire Campsite – Ben Nevis summit loop' is considered difficult, while the 'Lower Falls, Glen Nevis – View of Steall Falls loop' is moderate. Always check the specific route details for difficulty and prepare accordingly.

Are there any bothies that offer more comfort than a traditional basic shelter?

Yes, 'The Posh Bothy' in Inverroy offers a more luxurious 'glamping' experience. It provides fully equipped camping pods with en-suite shower rooms and kitchens, combining the charm of a bothy's setting with modern comforts. Additionally, the Alex MacIntyre Memorial Hut is well-equipped with electrics, heating, showers, and cooking facilities, offering a higher level of comfort than a basic bothy.

What are some notable natural features or landmarks near the huts?

Many huts are strategically located near iconic natural features. The Charles Inglis Clark Memorial Hut (CIC Hut) is dramatically situated beneath the immense North Face of Ben Nevis. Invermallie Bothy is near the remote and beautiful Loch Arkaig. The Glen Nevis Youth Hostel is at the start of popular routes up Ben Nevis and backed by the majestic Mamores. The area is rich in stunning Highland landscapes, including mountains, lochs, and forests.

Is parking available near the mountain huts?

Parking availability varies by hut. For huts accessible by road or near trailheads, parking is generally available, though it might be limited or require a fee. For more remote bothies, access often involves a significant walk, meaning parking would be at the nearest accessible point, such as a road end or village. Always plan your parking in advance, especially for popular trailheads.

What do visitors enjoy most about the huts and bothies in the Kilmallie area?

Visitors appreciate the unique access these shelters provide to the Scottish wilderness. The CIC Hut is valued for its unparalleled access to Ben Nevis's North Face. Bothies like Corryhully Bothy are praised for their generous provisions and the opportunity to read comments from previous guests, fostering a sense of community. The overall appeal lies in the authentic mountain experience, the stunning natural surroundings, and the chance to connect with other outdoor enthusiasts.
