November 1, 2025, Grabstätte von Anna Karbe

Grave of Anna Karbe and her family. Anna Karbe (born May 4, 1852, in Gramzow, Uckermark; died April 19, 1875, in Lichterfelde, Barnim) was a Brandenburg song and regional poet who achieved literary recognition during her lifetime. Born the daughter of a Prussian district councilor, she received no formal schooling but taught herself to read and was tutored by pastors and private tutors. Her life was marked by health problems and family suffering, which was reflected in her poetry. She herself referred to her works as "kitchen songs." After her death, her poems continued to be published, and one was included in the Protestant hymnal for Brandenburg and Pomerania in 1931. In honor of her artistic and local historical significance, an elementary school, a street, and a memorial stone in Gramzow were named after her.

The Gramzow Monastery ruins are the landmark of the oldest documented settlement in the Uckermark region, first mentioned as "Villa Gramsowe" in 1168. The Premonstratensian monastery was founded in 1178 by Duke Bogislaw I of Pomerania, making it one of the earliest Christian settlements in the region. After the Reformation, the monastery was converted into an electoral office around 1545. From 1687 to 1714, French Huguenots used the church for their religious services. On July 23, 1714, a devastating fire destroyed the entire monastery complex as well as many residential and farm buildings – only the western part of the church survived, including the richly articulated west gable and a unique hexagonal chapel, whose architectural form remains a mystery to this day.

The church was built as a rectangular fieldstone structure with a western transept tower the width of the nave. The tower likely dates from the 14th century. The church was severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War and was not rebuilt until 1686. Significant restorations took place in 1969/1970 and again in the 1990s, when the roofs were renewed.

It serves as a local history museum, offering insights into the regional history, culture, and traditions of the Uckermark. The former school building has been repurposed to showcase historical exhibits, documents, and everyday objects from past centuries. The museum is primarily managed by the Uckermark Historical Society of Prenzlau, Gramzow branch, and is a cultural meeting place for locals and visitors alike.
