The paths are mostly well-surfaced paths but there is a long, steep and rocky climb at the beginning followed by a rocky/grassy. But the climb can be quite intense and exposed on a bad day.

The track to the north can be linked with footpaths to the south so that you can run around the reservoir from Barley. You can also extend the run and take in Upper Ogden Reservoir or use this as the start or finishing section for a brilliant loop of Pendle Hill.
