Worth stopping here to spare a thought for a gamekeeper on the Nawton Tower Estate who died in a car accident in 1993. There is a memorial plaque here in his memory.

At the beginning of this stretch (meaning the southern end) you will get beautiful, green views of the hills across Riccal Dale. But ,I expect the purple flowery carpets further north along Low Tun Way will be the highlight. They might just give you something approaching a 'beauty heart attack' if there are romantic bones inside you! Just get there at the right time of the year, and it will be one of the most gorgeous places you've ever seen!

There is a system of caves here, originally discovered in 1821. Found here were fossilised remains of animals no longer inhabiting Britain: elephants, hippopotamuses and other. You're probably not a caver, but you can certainly admire from the outside.

Yes, there is a wide variety of options. You can find over 300 routes in the region, ranging from gentle strolls through woodlands to more demanding hikes across the North York Moors.
The area is highly regarded by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the diverse scenery, which includes the deep valleys of the North York Moors, well-wooded rolling countryside, and the expansive heather moorlands.
Absolutely. Many routes are designed as loops so you can end where you started. For a shorter, accessible circular walk, consider the Trig Point on Rollgate Bank loop from Pockley, which offers lovely views over rolling farmland.
Most trails in the area are dog-friendly, but it's essential to be mindful of the environment. You'll be walking through farmland with livestock and sensitive wildlife habitats in the North York Moors. Always keep your dog under close control, and on a lead where required by signage.
Yes, there are several easier walks suitable for families. The Kirkdale Wood East loop from Wombleton is a great option, offering a relatively short and manageable path through pleasant woodland.
The popular Riccal Dale and Nawton Tower loop features a mix of terrain. Expect to encounter woodland paths, tracks through the picturesque Riccal Dale, and some gentle ascents and descents. The paths are generally clear but can be muddy after rain.
Kirkdale Cave is a site of paleontological importance. Several trails explore the surrounding area, such as the Kirkdale Cave loop from Wombleton. The walk takes you through a mix of woodland and open fields on generally accessible paths, passing near the historic cave site.
The weather on the moors can change quickly. It's wise to wear sturdy walking shoes or boots and bring layers of clothing, including waterproofs. Always carry enough water and some snacks. Check the weather forecast before you set off and ensure your phone is fully charged.
Both locations are excellent gateways to the North York Moors. Nawton offers immediate access to quieter dales like Riccal Dale. Helmsley is a larger market town and a starting point for major routes like the Cleveland Way, often featuring more dramatic scenery like the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. Your choice depends on whether you prefer quieter countryside or more iconic, bustling trails.
Yes, while many routes are moderate, the region offers challenges for seasoned hikers. There are over 35 difficult-rated trails available. For a tougher experience, you can tackle sections of the long-distance Tabular Hills Walk or Cleveland Way, both of which pass near the area and involve more significant elevation changes and distances.
Parking is typically available in villages like Nawton, Wombleton, and Pockley, often in designated lay-bys or on-street. For popular trails, it's best to arrive early to secure a spot, especially on weekends. Always park considerately, avoiding blocking gateways or residents' access.
Nawton has limited public transport links, primarily local bus services connecting to nearby towns like Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside. Accessing most trailheads directly via public transport can be difficult, so traveling by car is generally more convenient for exploring the area's full range of hikes.
