It's one of those places which are easily missed... just a little hill with some trees on it?... Think again, this natural hill once (in the 19th century) had a folly called Baron Albert's Tower on it. Additionally, early 20th century excavations suggested that it also used to be a Roman signal tower long before.

A lovely and serene pond, just outside Scarborough. Don't fail to walk out onto the fishing platforms to get a good view - unless they're already occupied by anglers with whom the Mere is quite popular.

These ruins are all that remains of a once fortified house called Pele Tower, built in 1410 by a landowner who had married into de Aton (as in 'Ayton') family.

Yes, there are several circular routes. For a longer walk that explores the area between the villages, consider the Ayton Castle Ruins β Mill Lane, East Ayton loop from West Ayton. It's a moderate 12.5 km (7.8 mi) hike that takes you through the local countryside and along parts of the River Derwent.
For a shorter, easier walk suitable for families, the Hiking loop from Hutton Buscel is a great choice. It's an easy 6.6 km (4.1 mi) trail with minimal elevation, making it accessible for most fitness levels.
Most trails in the area are suitable for dogs, but it's important to keep them under control, especially near farmland with livestock. The paths through Forge Valley Woods National Nature Reserve are a popular choice for dog walkers, offering sheltered woodland and riverside scenery. Always check for local signage regarding leads.
While most local trails are easy to moderate, you can find more challenging terrain by heading into the North York Moors. For a strenuous climb with rewarding views, consider a trip to The Wainstones, a well-regarded series of crags popular with local hikers. For a longer day out, the nearby Cleveland Way offers more demanding coastal and moorland sections.
The Forge Valley walk follows the River Derwent through a wooded gorge, known as a National Nature Reserve. It's a relatively flat and sheltered path, making it a popular choice in most weather. The route is known for its tranquil atmosphere and waterside views. Please be aware that sections of the boardwalk can be subject to closure for maintenance, so it's wise to check for local updates before you go.
Yes, several walks can be planned to start or end near a pub. Both West Ayton and the neighbouring village of East Ayton have walker-friendly pubs. You can easily incorporate a stop for refreshments into a circular walk that passes through the villages, such as one of the many routes that explore the area around Ayton Castle.
For walks starting in the village, there is on-street parking available, but please park considerately. For trails in Forge Valley, there are designated car parks at the northern and southern ends of the woods. If you plan to explore Dalby Forest, be aware that it has its own visitor centre with extensive parking, which may require a fee.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars from over 350 reviews. Hikers often praise the variety of walks available, from the peaceful riverside paths in Forge Valley to the gentle rolling hills and historic landmarks like Ayton Castle.
Absolutely. The ruins of Ayton Castle are a central feature of many local hikes. For another historical landmark, you could plan a trip to Captain Cook's Monument on the edge of the moors. It's a popular destination that involves a manageable uphill walk and offers fantastic views over the landscape.
The landscape is quite diverse. You'll find gentle riverside walks along the River Derwent, ancient woodland trails in Forge Valley Woods and Raincliffe Woods, and open rolling countryside. For more dramatic scenery, the expansive heather moorland and unique rock formations of the North York Moors, such as the Bridestones, are a short drive away.
There are around 20 curated hiking routes to discover in the immediate vicinity of West Ayton. These range from short, easy strolls to more moderate half-day hikes, with options to connect to the wider network of trails in the North York Moors National Park.
