A nice little stop with the pooch and I both getting an ice-cream, plenty of seating outside in a big garden right next to the waterfall

There is a wonderful path that traverses the top of the steep hillside above Meliden. Amazing views out to sea and over towards Anglesey from here. The area is a nature reserve and the very northern end of the Offa's Dyke long distance walking path.

Dyserth Waterfall is a waterfall in Dyserth, North Wales. The River Ffyddion, a tributary of the River Clwyd, falls down a 70-foot ledge creating the waterfall. In the 1880s, mining in the area caused it to dry up, however when the mining stopped, the waterfall resumed its full flow.

Yes, many trails in the area are suitable for walking with dogs. The landscape of open fields and woodlands provides great environments for them. However, you will likely cross fields with sheep and cattle, so it's essential to keep your dog on a lead in these areas. A well-regarded local spot is the Dyserth to Prestatyn Way, which is known for being dog-friendly.
The region is excellent for circular walks, with most trails designed as loops starting and ending in the villages. A great option that takes in some of the area's classic scenery is the Gwaenysgor Village β View of Gop Hill Cairn loop from Trelawnyd. This route offers a varied experience through farmland and past historical points of interest.
While most trails in the area are rated as moderate due to some hills and stiles, shorter and less strenuous options are available. For a family outing, consider exploring the paths around Gop Hill, which offer rewarding views without a major expedition. The Prestatyn Nature Reserve is also a popular choice for families, offering easy, flat walking paths in a pleasant wooded setting.
For some of the most expansive views, head for the area's high points. Gop Hill is a prominent landmark offering panoramic vistas of the Flintshire countryside stretching towards the North Wales coast. For a route that includes a rewarding summit, consider the Castle Quarry β Graig Fawr Summit loop from Trelawnyd, which takes you to the top of Graig Fawr for stunning coastal views.

The terrain is generally moderate, featuring a mix of country lanes, woodland paths, and open farmland. You should expect some gentle but sustained climbs, particularly on routes that go up to Gop Hill or Graig Fawr. Paths can be uneven and muddy after rain, and you will frequently encounter stiles and kissing gates.
Absolutely. The area is rich in history. Many walks pass by Gop Cairn, the second-largest prehistoric mound in Britain. The View of Gop Hill Cairn β Gwaenysgor Village loop from Gwaenysgor is a great choice for this. You can also explore sections of the famous Offa's Dyke Path, which runs along the edge of the region.
For walks starting in Trelawnyd or Gwaenysgor, on-street parking within the villages is the most common option. Please park considerately, as these are residential areas.
