Ruins of Battenberg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Battenberg Castle probably originally served to protect the Murbach fief, which encompassed the villages of Kleinkarlbach, Bobenheim/Berg, and Weisenheim/Berg. In 1359, it was first mentioned in connection with the Counts of Leiningen. It is suspected that the castle was built around 1240 by Count Friedrich III. zu Leiningen, almost simultaneously with Neuleiningen Castle. The ring wall remains, on the south side a gun tower, probably from the 16th century, on the north corner a remnant of the gatehouse. Behind it is a small residential building from the 18th or early 19th century, on the east side a substructure of the residential building with a high-lying vaulted cellar and a stair tower in the middle of the courtyard, expanded in the 19th century as a garden pavilion with an iron staircase and balcony.

Neuleiningen Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle ruin Neuleiningen occupies a special position among the Palatine castles, as it was probably built due to influences from the Crusades or at least Western European models. Diving into the 16th century is also possible in Burgschänke. Wildly romantic!

Neuleiningen Historic Village

Highlight • Settlement

Neuleiningen is a nearly 800 years old castle village with about 900 inhabitants. The castle, visible from afar, was built in the first half of the 13th century. The story is quite interesting, see neuleiningen.de, and strolling in the streets is also fun 😀

The dominant heart of the village is Neuleinigen Castle. She was in 1240 1250 under Count Friedrich III. completed by Leiningen. It is the earliest fortified castle on German soil and was built on the model of the French castles of the Ile de France. With a large courtyard, surrounded by a ring wall, to which buildings were attached on the inside. Today, the picturesque village and its castle ruins offer a fantastic backdrop for musical and culinary events such as the Castle Wine Festival, the Neuleiningen Castle Summer and the Advent market in the streets.
