On the northern edge of the Lindemannsruhe hiking car park is the plaque with Otto Wilms' "Pälzer Prayer". There the first sign post with a black ax on a yellow background shows the way into the forest. On firm, partly rocky forest floor, the route leads through sparse forest to the Teufelsmauer, from where it runs parallel to the Leistadt historical circular hiking trail for a stretch. Passing the Teufelsbank you reach the Kanapee (approx. 100m off the main path), then you pass the Leininger Grenzstein and reach the "Soup Bowl" and the Krumholzer Stuhl, an old quarry. We head slightly down the slope towards the Ungeheuersee with the Palatinate Forest Association hut (open: mid-March to mid-November on Sundays and on all public holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (November only until 5 p.m.) and from mid-May to mid-October also on Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.). We continue along the edge of the lake, past the Herxheimer Brunnen, now a longer passage slightly uphill until the path meets the Pfälzer Weinsteig. In a southerly direction you now walk towards the Lindemannsruhe again. Shortly before the parking lot (km 6.2) the path leads west, then crosses the state road L518 and leads slightly offset again in a southerly direction to Heidenfels. Here it is worth taking a detour over the rough steps down into the sea of rocks at the foot of the Heidenfels with its impressive rock formations and overhangs. After a short serpentine-like descent, the path leads without major inclines or declines over narrow paths through quiet mixed forest to the Geiersbrunnen, which was built in honor of the former district manager and later professor of forestry Karl Johann Gayer (*1822 - +1907). After a few 100 meters, the Bismarck Tower comes into view, whose upper viewing floor offers a wonderful 360° panoramic view over the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine plain (from May to October, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., November to April on Sunday and on public holidays 10am-4pm). The attached kiosk offers refreshments and snacks. From the Bismarck Tower it is only a few steps back to the Lindemannsruhe car park with the Forsthausgaststätte

Located directly on the Ungeheuersee, very large outdoor area. When I'm there it's always closed.... I've never seen the hut in use (there are probably only a few days a week here) Managed by the PWV, it will probably be difficult to find volunteers?!?!?! But if you are self-sufficient, you will always find plenty of seating here for a picnic.

The Ungeheuersee is a flat bog pond fed by the Krumbach, protected as a natural monument since the 1930s and part of the only raised bog in its low mountain range. It's an idyllic and tranquil place for nature observation. Another notable spot is the Eckbach Pond, an idyllic reservoir with historical significance for local mills.
Yes, the region offers several lakes for swimming and recreation. The Lambsheimer Weiher features a beach, a restaurant, and a beach bar, making it a popular spot. Further afield, the Helmbachweiher is a small forest bathing lake with clear, cold water, a jetty, and a sunbathing lawn. The Gelterswoog, located in the Palatinate Forest, also offers cycling and swimming with a dedicated beach area.
Several lakes are great for families. The Ungeheuersee and Eckbach Pond are both listed as family-friendly, offering serene environments for walks. The Lambsheimer Weiher, with its beach and amenities, is also a good choice for families looking for recreational activities.
Absolutely. The Ganerbenweg and Ungeheuersee trail specifically includes the Ungeheuersee, offering a path through quiet mixed forest and past historical sites. The Ungeheuersee itself is great for walking around. For more hiking options in the broader area, you can explore the Hiking around Obrigheim (Pfalz) guide.
Yes, the Ungeheuersee's name derives from old terms for forest pasture and enclosures, not monsters, reflecting its long history of interaction with human activity. The Eckbach Pond was created in the Middle Ages to store water for mills, with its dam raised in the 1870s for flood protection.
Beyond lake activities, the region offers diverse outdoor pursuits. You can find numerous options for Road Cycling, Hiking, and Gravel Biking. These guides provide routes that often pass through scenic areas, including some near the lakes.
While many natural areas are generally dog-friendly for walks, specific rules can apply to bathing areas. For instance, dogs are not permitted to swim at the Helmbachweiher. It's always best to check local signage or specific regulations for each lake regarding dog access, especially in designated swimming or protected areas.
The lakes offer different experiences throughout the year. Summer is ideal for swimming and recreational activities at places like Lambsheimer Weiher or Gelterswoog. Spring and autumn provide pleasant temperatures for hiking and nature observation around lakes like Ungeheuersee, with vibrant foliage or blooming flora. Even winter can offer tranquil walks around the frozen or partially frozen lakes.
The Niefernheimer Löcher Springs, while not a large lake, is a unique natural monument. It features ponds covered by marsh plants, with a history of rising water undermining the ground, creating a mystical, enchanted place. It's a fascinating spot for those interested in geological curiosities and local legends.
Amenities vary by lake. The Lambsheimer Weiher is well-equipped with a restaurant and a beach bar. The Helmbachweiher has a kiosk and a spacious sunbathing lawn. The Ungeheuersee has a Palatinate Forest Association hut nearby, which is open on specific days. For other lakes, amenities might be more limited, focusing on natural experiences.
The Almensee, located near the airfield in Bad Dürkheim, is one of the closest lakes to Obrigheim (Pfalz), approximately 7.8 km away. Its proximity makes it a convenient option for locals seeking a nearby body of water.
Visitors frequently appreciate the diverse natural landscapes and recreational opportunities. The Ungeheuersee is praised for its idyllic and tranquil atmosphere. The Lambsheimer Weiher is loved for its beautiful views and beach bar. Overall, the mix of natural monument lakes, recreational bathing lakes, and forest ponds provides options for nature walks, swimming, and observing protected ecosystems.
