There are still remains of walls and stairs at the site of this highlight. The (current) red and white radio mast is located about 100 m further west.

Really beautiful cross! However, for the reasons mentioned above, it doesn't really give you that "summit feeling"...

Great idea with the "summit cross" on a small hill

The peak is only interesting because of its military past

"In 1907, the Palatinate Forest poet Fritz Claus had the idea of erecting a square tower in honor of the then Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria (1821-1912). The still young Palatinate Forest Association, of which Fritz Claus was one of the founders, was strongly involved in the Involved in the planning of the tower and after significant financial support from the Prince Regent, who also took over the sponsorship, construction from local red sandstone began in the same year. After a construction period of 15 months, the tower was inaugurated on September 26th, 1909. It served for a long time the porch of the tower as a shelter for hikers and forest workers." The summit cross on the 473-meter-high "Großer Hausberg" was handed over to its destination on Easter Saturday 2022 with a small celebration. It is around four meters high, consists of very weather-resistant larch wood and has a granite base. A tin box is attached to the back, in which a "summit booklet" is stored. Unfortunately, it is "only" at 466 meters, because a PV system is installed on what is actually the highest point of the local mountain. The cross is absolutely beautiful (situated) and would not cause the slightest shame even on a much higher, alpine peak! Finally a highlight that deserves to be called as such in addition to the actual highlight on which it is written! ABSOLUTELY GREAT!

Despite the rain, we wanted to cycle up the hill. The forest path was more pleasant than if we had driven up from Bann. This route is paved but very steep. Also, the forest trail is more pleasant in rain and sunshine.

The region offers several popular viewpoints. The Luitpold Tower on Weißenberg is the highest point, providing panoramic views of the Palatinate Forest. Another favorite is the Eschkopfturm on Eschkopf (608 m), an octagonal tower with a 360° view, especially beautiful at sunset. The Schindhübel Observation Tower also offers lovely views of the surrounding area.
Beyond traditional peaks, Heltersberg is known for its impressive rock formations. The Seelenfels Massif features cliffs stretching over 600 meters with individual formations like Seelenturm and Seelenwand. Another notable natural structure is the Rock Arch on the Felsenwald Premium Trail, a natural breakthrough in red sandstone near the Beckenhof forester's house.
Yes, some peaks have historical significance. The Eschkopfturm on Eschkopf (608 m) is a listed building. The Großer Arius, though a small peak, has a military past with remnants of a former radar station and bunker portals.
The Heltersberg area offers a variety of hiking trails, from easy to moderate. You can find routes like the 'Beer garden at Lake Clausen – Saltuarier Tombstone Relief loop' or the 'Mühlenbrunnen – Binsborn Rock loop'. For more options, explore the Hiking around Heltersberg guide.

The Palatinate Forest, including the Heltersberg area, is beautiful year-round. Spring brings lush greenery, summer offers pleasant forest shade, and autumn is vibrant with fall colors. Even winter hiking can be rewarding, especially for experiencing the quiet, forested terrain.
Many trails in the Palatinate Forest are suitable for families. While specific 'family-friendly' categories aren't always assigned to peaks, the general terrain of rolling hills and well-maintained paths, like those leading to the Rock Arch on the Felsenwald Premium Trail, can be enjoyable for families. Look for shorter, easier loops in the Hiking around Heltersberg guide.
Yes, many trails in the Palatinate Forest are dog-friendly. The Schindhübel Observation Tower area, for example, is noted as perfect for dogs on hot days due to streams. Always keep your dog on a leash and be mindful of wildlife and other hikers.
The elevations in the Heltersberg area are characterized by rolling hills rather than towering peaks. The Heltersberg Mountain itself stands at 606 meters (1988 feet) above sea level, and the Eschkopf reaches 608 meters. These elevations offer distinct views and hiking experiences within the Palatinate Forest.
Parking is generally available near trailheads and popular attractions. For instance, the Rock Arch on the Felsenwald Premium Trail is accessible near the forester's house Beckenhof, which typically has parking. Many hiking routes also start from designated parking areas, such as the 'Röderhof trailhead parking loop' mentioned in the hiking guide.
Visitors particularly appreciate the panoramic views from towers like the Luitpold Tower and Eschkopfturm. The unique geological formations of the Seelenfels Massif and the natural Rock Arch are also highly regarded. The overall natural beauty and the opportunity for quiet, scenic hikes through the dense Palatinate Forest are consistently praised.
While not a 'hidden gem' in the traditional sense, the Summit cross on the local mountain Bann offers a charming and less crowded spot at 473 meters, featuring a beautiful larch wood cross and a summit booklet for visitors. It's a peaceful place for a break with a unique local touch.
